Well, unlike wet food, the answer to this question is completely based on the comfort level of the pet owner. Im going to break things down for you into smaller topics to help you decide how long you want to leave your dry food out for your pet.

Can Cat Food Go Bad And Stale

Can cat food go bad in the heat? Can dry cat food go bad in the heat?

These are the basic questions that cat owners want to know when they get into the groove of stocking new cat food. First-time cat owners are also iffy about buying larger bags of cat food or more cans or packets of wet food because they are worried about all the goodies becoming stale. If you have the same anxieties about your cat food at home, todays your lucky day. We will explore how cat food eventually expires and how you can properly store your cat food at home.

Can Dry and Canned Cat Food Go Bad?

Yes, both dry cat food/kibble and canned cat food can go bad. The expiration date of cat food is usually six months after the production date. After this period, manufacturers tend to wash their hands of any responsibilities should you choose to continue feeding the cat food to your pet/s.

Should you leave the cat food in its original packaging for a long time, the preservatives and other compounds in the cat food will not protect the cat food from degrading into an inedible substance over time. The dry kibble will eventually disintegrate.

Some websites will advise pet owners that they should freeze leftover kibble. However, freezing will likely produce mixed results, and its not going to be a good idea in general unless you can vacuum-pack the leftover food very tightly so that theres no air and little chance that ice crystals will form in the kibble and ruin it.

How To Keep Dry Cat Food?

Food irradiation resulting in the vitamins destruction and oxidation of fatty acids leading to rancidity are common. But you can avoid it. How? So simple. Just store these bags of dry cat food in a dry place at cool temperatures.

The temperatures should not higher than 100 degrees Fahrenheit . Meanwhile, if we keep these dry foods in a dry place with pretty high temperatures, it could be a reason for the destruction of vitamins in the food. In some instances, food could go rancid.

If you keep the dry food in a dry place at the temperatures of up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit for longer than 2 days, it can significantly increase the normal degradation or the food vitamin destructions.

Raw Rules Food For Cats

There are two main rules for feeding cats. When you follow these, youre working with the cats natural nutritional patterns.

  • Feed your cat nose-to-tail animals that are smaller than they are .; This includes bones, muscles, and organs especially the heart.Be careful about giving cats too much liver they can get vitamin A toxicity from liver.; This recipe has a good amount you want it to replicate what they would get if they were hunting in the wild: Muscle meat and liver/heart/kidney.; If you can find small animals that is a more natural diet for a cat!
  • If your food is not fresh and raw, supplement with the essential amino acid;taurine.
  • After seeing so much success with switching our cat Bob to a raw food diet for kidney disease, friends and family and readers have been asking me about a recipe for kittens and healthy cats.

The only change to the Feline Kidney Care Raw Food recipe is that I used bone-in chicken in place of the beef, as it contains the healthy fats from the skin as well as bone bone that cats need to grow and maintain bone health.; Cats with kidney disease need to limit their phospherous, but cats without kidney disease should NOT limit phosphorous and should include bones in the diet.

Is this recipe enough taurine? I wasnt sure, since taurine in the chicken heart may degrade when its frozen, and my chicken hearts come frozen.; Since taurine is so essential to cats, I sprinkle;powdered taurine, 1 pinch, on each container of his food .

Cats require 22 amino acids to stay healthy and can synthesize only 11 of them. The remaining amino acids, called essential amino acids, must come from their food. For this reason, cat food should be at least 30% protein.

But not all protein is equal; each protein source varies in biological availability. Eggs have a biologic value of 100, while feathers have a biologic value of zero. Cats thrive on animal protein because it is highly metabolizable and nourishing.

Plant protein sources are cheaper and help to round out the guaranteed analysis, but they are less biologically available than animal proteins. Plant proteins and other types of less biologically available protein are processed inefficiently by the body, increasing the burden on the liver and kidneys.

Canned Food Go Bad In A Hot Car: Yes Find Out Why

It was a hot and sunny afternoon; you just got home from the groceries. Your car filled with paper bags of food, toilet paper, and cleaning materials. You rushed out of your car while holding everything you bought from the grocery store. You placed it all down at the kitchen counter and went straight to bed. The following day, as you open the car door. You suddenly see a can of Campbells Chicken Noodle Soup on the car seat. You realized you forgot this canned food in your car under the hot sun and you start wondering if it is still edible.

This scenario almost happens to all of us, grocery shoppers. We were rushing to get out of our cars and we didnt even notice the things we accidentally left behind. We start asking ourselves,;does canned food go bad in a hot car? The answer is,;yes.;The USDA Food Safety & Inspection Services indicated that the average canned food can possibly last for about one to four years. This is only possible if it was stored in a cool, dark place. When canned foods are exposed to a temperature of over 100 degrees Fahrenheit it can potentially bring harm to the canned food and should not be consumed.

How To Tell If Canned Food Has Gone Bad

Milky substance: If the liquid covering the veggies inside the can has a milky appearance, do not eat it.

Dent: If the dent is large enough that you can stick your finger into it, it should not be eaten. A dent can cause a small opening on the can and allow bacteria to enter. Cans that have a small dent should be okay but inspect it prior to eating.

Rust: Any can with rust should be properly inspected before eating. If the rust can wiped off with your finger, its okay to eat. However, if the rust is stuck on the can or on the inside of the can, it must not be eaten.

Swollen: Cans that are swollen, either because of reaching freezing temperatures or because of bacteria, should be discarded. The can will bulge when its contaminated with harmful bacteria.

Leaking: If a can is leaking, it has certainly been exposed to bacteria. Do not eat food from any can that shows signs of leaking. A dirty label could also mean that a leak is present.

Dented cans – can you buy them at a discount?

Some stores sell dented cans at a reduced cost. Usually theres a clearance section where these items can be found. If you find a dented can at the regular price you might be able to get a discount, but thats usually up to the managerit doesnt hurt to ask though!

    The general rule is to never purchase a can that is leaking, has rust, deep dents, or is bulging.;

A can that has a small dent should be safe to eat, but inspect it anyway.

Is Commercial Cat Food Necessary For Cats

We keep dry food as recommended by our vet available at all times to our cat. He greatly prefers the wet food, and most weeks doesnt even touch the dry food. Still, I dont want to have to worry that Im not giving him enough, so I do have a feeder for Bob that always has dry food in it.

I dont think that a little dry food here and there is bad for cats, but I would always want to have raw meat, including organ meats, as the main part of their diet.

Does Wet Food Mean Your Cats Consume More Water

Although many vets now question the dental benefits of dry food, almost every vet would agree that cats are better off when they consume more water. Water helps prevent symptoms of FIC/FLUTD , and it also is theorized to reduce the workload of the kidneys. Wet food has more water.

Many people also believe that wet food helps reduce obesity in cats. This is not because it is less calorically dense than dry food . It is because it goes bad if its left out all day. People therefore tend to feed wet food in meals, but dry food is generally left out in a massive all day, all-you-can-eat buffet for the cat. Unlimited access to food predisposes most species, including cats and humans, to obesity.
