Prepping Your Eyes For Liquid Eyeliner

Now that you know the dos and donts of applying liquid eyeliner, its time to learn how to prep your eyes. You might be wondering, Is prepping really necessary? Well, noand in fact, many people skip this step, especially if theyre in a rush. However, its a good habit to get into since it really helps with applying eye makeup and making it stick for long periods of time.

Here are three simple prepping steps you can follow:

  • Gently clean the area around your eyes with water or a cleanser. Removing excess oil prevents smears and other potential mistakes.
  • Prime your eyes if you need your eyeliner to stay put all day long. Celebrity makeup artist Sir John recommends using an oil-free primer before applying makeup. Some makeup artists like to prime their eyes using a concealer, but Sir John advises against this since concealers usually contain oils that can smudge your makeup.
  • Apply your eye shadow before applying your liquid eyeliner. This way, your eye shadow doesnt blend with your eyeliner and ruin the well-defined lines.
  • Draw A Line From The Outer Corner Of Your Eye

Position the tip of your eyeliner on the outer corner of your eye, then draw a line that follows the angle youve marked. To ensure that your wings are symmetrical, repeat this on the other eye before moving on to the next step. Avoid lifting your upper lid as you draw because this stretches out your skin. Instead, tilt your head back slightly and lower your eyes as you draw. This will allow you to see the true shape of your cat eyes.

Liquid Eyeliner Tricks By Eye Shape

To take your liquid eyeliner game to the next level, weve gathered some of the most helpful tips and tricks.

Some liquid eyeliner looks only work on certain eye shapes, so if youre finding that the steps above arent helping you achieve the look you want, find your eye shape below to learn some more specific techniques.

    Hooded

Start your wing where your eyelids hood starts. After drawing your wing, draw another line from the inner tip of the wing to your upper lash line. You most likely wont need to draw it all the way to the center of your eyelid. If you cant see the entirety of this line when your eye is completely open, remove the part thats hidden.

    Monolids

The eyeliner should be crisp and be as close to the lash line as possible. If you can, tightline your eyes. If your monolid eyes are hooded, youll need to try this trick instead.

    Downturned

Draw a thin line and have the wing flick up towards your eyebrow. Keep the wing short and leave your bottom lash line bare.

    Close-Set

Start your eyeliner in the middle of your eyelid and make your wing more horizontal instead of a 45-degree angle.

    Deep-Set

The liner should be thin at the inner corner of your eye and should get thicker toward the outer half.

    Wide-Set

Make your liner thicker and more concentrated at the inner corner of your eye and apply minimal eye makeup towards the outer half. Opt for a shorter wing.

    Small Eyes

Dont line your entire eye as this will just make them look even smaller.

No matter what your desired effect is, a tapered point Q-tip will be your best friend for cleaning up errors, as well as sharpening your lines and shapes. “When I have a liner that has gotten too thick or to correct any mistakes, Ill take a pointed makeup Q-tip dampened with micellar water and refine the line,” says Brown, cautioning that you should be wary of using traditional Q-tips as the fibres can get caught in mascara on lashes and travel into the eye. Additionally, eschew makeup remover, which can disturb the surrounding makeup around the line too much and can leave an oily residue . Another tried-and-true technique is harnessing the correcting and contrast-creating power of concealer. “Finishing with concealer underneath will also accentuate the liner,” says Cheng.

Then, using a fine-tipped brush or pen, slowly draw a line from the inner to the outer corner of your eye, following your lash line. Once youve reached the outer corner, continue the line upward, flicking it out at a 45-degree angle. To make your look really pop, apply a coat of mascara.

Cat Eye Tip #: Use Tape As A Guide

If you dont have a stencil, you can use tape to help get your cat eye on. Place a piece of regular ol adhesive tape at the outer corner of your eye, going up toward the end of your eyebrow. Once the tape is securely in place, line your upper lash line as per usual. Thicken the line to your desired intensity, then wing it out. Drag the wing to where you want it, not worrying about keeping the bottom edge straight. After youve added the tiny triangle at the edge of your eye, youre free to remove the taperevealing a sharp line.

You can also create the entire shape of the cat eye with a sharp brush and lighter-color eye shadow, which is what Lavonne likes to do before going back over it with eyeliner. That way, there’s a lot more room for error and you can see how the shape of the liner will pair with your eye shape before committing to a dark, waterproof wing.

Resist the urge to close or stretch your eyes

A lot of people use their fingers to stretch out their eyelid when applying an eyeliner wing. It might just be a reflex, but it can singlehandedly ruin a cat eye. Stretching risks warping the consistency and symmetry of the liner, Tommy says.

Painting an eyeliner wing when your eye is completely closed can cause similar problems because the shape of the eye can change as it opens and closes. This especially goes for hooded eyes and people with mature skin, which is why Hughes always recommends applying eyeliner while the eye is open.

Because I have hooded eyes, I only draw my cat-eye to the middle of my eye, keeping my eyes open the whole way through.

    • Read our step-by-step cat-eye makeup guide for the perfect flick.

Over the past couple of years, eyes have become everything in makeup. This was inevitable: the area above our masks is the only place we can safely showcase our personal makeup style. Eyes have long been a feature to be admired and accentuated, with eye makeup dating back to ancient Egypt. Looks like the cat eye are as coveted today by makeup-lovers as they were in the 1950s by Old Hollywood starlets. “I always think of Marilyn Monroe’s sort of liner,” makeup artist Troy Surratt says. “She would keep the lid light and then have a beat of liquid liner traced against the upper lashline.” The look was right up there with roller-set hair and red lips.

Today, the cat eye is still a huge trend, whether classic, modernized with color, or applied in an artfully edgy structure. The go-to graphic eye enhancement works on pretty much everyone, complementing nearly all eye shapes and colors by creating the illusion of a lush lash line. Achieving the cat-eye makeup look is pretty quick, but some might struggle to get it right.

We’re here to make sure the struggle isn’t real. Read on for our expert tips on how to create the perfect cat eye, with product picks and techniques.

Cat Eye Tip #: Clean Up Mistakes With Micellar Water

Even the steadiest hands make mistakes from time to time. And thats where micellar water comes in. If you arent completely pleased with your cat eye, all you need is a cotton swab dipped in micellar water. Saturate a swab with the LOréal Paris Micellar Cleansing Water Complete Cleanser Waterproof All Skin Types, then use it to clean up the shape of your cat eyeits that easy.

Determine The Angle Of Your Wings

Getting the angle of your wings is tricky. Generally, you want it to go upwards and outwards, towards the tip of your eyebrow. Following your eye shape results in a more natural look. To create a straight line, take any eyeshadow brush and angle it from your nose to the outer tip of your brow and draw a dot to mark the tip of the wing. Alternatively, you can cut a piece of tape and place this along the outer corner of your eye, just beneath the bottom lash line. Do this on both eyes and make sure that the pieces of tape are positioned in the same angle.

    What Techniques to Avoid

Don’t close your eye. “The first common mistake is winging out the eyeliner while closing your eye,” says Hannah. “It doesn’t matter if you’re 17 or 70, the pressure of the eye being closed can cause the lid to wrinkle and creates an uneven line.”

Try not to wing it in one step. Cat-eyes take anywhere from four to eight strokes, depending on how comfortable you are with it. Use smaller strokes to minimize mistakes.

Dont stretch the skin. If you apply liner while stretching your eyelid, you ‘ll end up with a squiggly line when you let go.

You can’t rush perfection. If you are running late it’s not the day to wing your liner.

How to Properly Apply Liquid Eyeliner

Now that you know what not to do, here’s Hannah’s liquid eyeliner tips on creating a classic cat eye makeup look.

STEP 1: Tilt your chin up, but look down to expose your lid without closing it completely.

STEP 2: First, create the wing on the outer corner of your eye.

STEP 3: Then, working from the outside side in, use small strokes to line close to your lash line. This helps minimize over compensation, which creates huge thick lines.

STEP 4:Once you’ve created matching lines on both eyes, you can go back over the outer portion of your line to create the desired thickness.
