Why Does My Cat Sleep With Me? – 5 Reasons Youll Love to Know

Many people believe that kneading is an instinctive trait for kittens. Newborn kittens naturally knead their mothers belly to stimulate the production of milk. So why do they continue to knead whenever they turn into full-grown felines? It might be because they associate kneading with the comforts of nursing. The next time your precious kitty starts making biscuits on your lap, remember it could be their way of showing their affection towards you.

Your Cat Likes Your Night Light

Whats dark to the human eye isnt so dark to the feline. Cats see better in the dark due to having more light-sensitive receptors in their eyes, and small amounts of light may be quite disruptive, Cox explains.

If you leave a nightlight on, sleep with the TV flickering, or have streetlights shining into your room, that may be just the right light for fun. Minimize light in the sleeping area or try room-darkening blinds to discourage activity.

On the other hand, if your cat is a senior citizen, her failing vision may be making it difficult to see at all, causing her restlessness. A soft light can help.

Adjust your lighting, giving each change about a week to take effect, to see what works best for your situation.

Why Is My Cat Walking In Circles

Home»Cat Health Articles»Why Is My Cat Walking in Circles?

Cats can sometimes be a little weird and act in an unusual manner, but if you have noticed that your feline friend walks in circles too often or all the time, something else might be at the root of the behavior.

In this post, well look at the majority of reasons why a cat could walk in circles. Some of them are pathological, but there are less worrying causes, too.;

Greetings

Its not exactly common for a cat to greet you by walking in circles, but this can also happen, at times. If a cat wants to get your attention on something in particular, she might be doing something called herding. In essence, she is trying to get you to walk somewhere so that she shows you something.

Other cats are known to walk in circles for display purposes. This usually happens if the cat is trying to establish her dominance over you. However, wed like to note that walking in circles, in this case, is usually associated with aggression or different sounds that might tell you that the cat doesnt like you at that moment.

If your cat walks in circles only when you get home, youll be happy to know that shes effectively saying Hello!. Other common behaviors shown by a cat whos happy that her owner is home is rolling over onto her back, verbalizing, and stopping and rubbing her head against your legs.;

If your pet also seems disoriented besides the walking behavior, something more serious might have affected her.;

Flicking Or Swishing Tail

Flicking or swishing of the tail usually means they are annoyed, although if only the tip of the tail is flicking back and forth, it means they are somewhat playful and happy. If their tail is standing straight up, that means they are feeling very confident. Mr. Nibbles sometimes does this if my husband comes home from a business trip; it is also a sign of happiness.

Why Does My Cat Follow Me It Might Be A Kitten

One of the answers to, Why does my cat follow me? is that a cat following you around might be learned behavior that stems from her kitten days. Despite the image of cats as highly independent creatures, young kittens learn about life by following their mothers. This is sometimes called the mother-kitten connection.

A kitten quickly learns that trailing her mother around will provide food, play, safety and affection pretty much all the things a human ends up undertaking when they adopt a cat.

Jacqueline Munera, a Certified Cat Behavior Consultant at the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants, builds on the point by adding that these sorts of positive interactions which also include allogrooming activities like brushing and petting help forge a bond between cats and their humans.

Some cats are quite curious and want to keep tabs on what their human is doing, Jacqueline adds. Some cats just seem to enjoy hanging out with their humans and will follow them around different areas of the house. There can also be a darker side to this strong affiliative relationship in which;cats actually suffer from distress when they are separated from their humans.

So, the next time you find yourself asking, Why does my cat follow me? the first answer could be its a case of carrying out learned behavior.

Your Cat Is Waking You Up Because He Or She Is Sick

Some medical conditions inhibit a good nights sleep. Even a mild ailment such as a toothache can make a feline restless.

Be particularly suspicious if this is a new behavior, especially in an older cat, warns Cindi Cox, DVM at the MSPCA-Angell adoption center in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts. Some of the more common culprits for sudden onsets of yowling are arthritis, hyperthyroidism, and high blood pressure, all of which can be diagnosed and treated by a veterinarian.

Start with a call to your vet if your cat is repeatedly exhibiting unusual behavior at night. Getting her on the road to recovery may mean youll both be sleeping soundly again.

Training Your Cat To Be Okay With You Coming Near

The first hurdle you have to overcome with a cat who always runs away can be a pretty big problem, as its a bit of a catch 22.

You cant prove youre not going to be annoying when you get up close and personal if you cant even get near enough to your cat to prove that to him or her because each time you try, he or she runs away.

The solution? Work around your cat, approach when he or she is busy with something else like sleeping or eating.

Put down your kittys grub for dinner. While he or she is distracted, literally stand or sit next to him or her.

Remember, dont touch or even reach out to your cat at all. Just stay put, hands hidden behind your back, held together in front of you, or if youre sitting, in your lap.

If you have an especially flighty cat and you sit or stand right next to the food bowl, your cat is likely to not want to go near dinner at first, but the allure of food when a bellys rumbling, and the fact that youve stayed put without moving or making an attempt to come too near for a while will convince kitty its okay to come over and eat.

Repeat this process whenever you feed your cat, and if youre interested in giving a few snacks throughout the day do the same.

Put the snack down, sit near your cat, stick around until he or shes eaten and left, and in the meantime do not move or touch your cat.

You can do the same with naps. Kitty dozed off in the corner? Go near your cat and sit or stand by him or her.

There Are A Few Reasons Why Cats Like To Position Themselves On Items Like Your Books Or Laptops

Why Does My Cat Walk On Me?

First of all, those things smell like you because theyre yours and youve been using them. Just like any other animal, cats are strongly influenced by scent, especially when it comes to the space they inhabit. If they love you, theyll love anything that smells like you. If you place a few decoy books on your bed, youll still find that the cat only wants to lay on the book that has just been in your hands. Thats how much theyre driven by the sense of smell.

Another thing to understand about cats is that theyre very territorial. Urinating is certainly a way to mark your territory among animals, but cats also claim whats theirs by rubbing themselves on it. Thats why youll see cats rubbing their face on the edge of your book or on the keyboard of your laptop. Theyre trying to transfer their pheromones to the object, because if its taking up so much of your time, they figure its important and they want in on the action. false

Cats are also smart , so they know that whatever youre reading or typing is taking up all your attentionand thats the very attention they want for themselves. So when cats walk or sit on your belongings youre in the middle of using, its because theyre sending you an intentional message: Get off your dumb laptop and pay attention to me instead. And its hard to say no to them, isnt it?

Why Does My Cat Knead Me

Kneading is the motion that domesticated cats make by pushing their paws in and out and switching between the left and right paw against a soft surface such as a blanket or your lap. Some cats keep their claws retracted, while others will push them out when kneading. While this odd behavior is undeniably cute and worthy of a spot on your Instagram story, you might be wondering why they knead in the first place. Even people who study cat behavior ask the same question and dont have a solid concrete answer. However, there are a number of theories out there. Grab your feline pal and keep reading to learn some of the most popular hypotheses out there.

Ask A Vet: Why Does My Cat Lie On My Keyboard When I Am Typing

Cat people laugh and post photos of cats stretching out on their keyboards and technical gadgets. Some people believe that cats like these items because they are physically warm and perhaps they are correct. But it is probably more complicated than that. Cats do not limit themselves to warm computer parts.; They also lounge on things, like paperback books, that have no internal warmth at all . It seems like anything that you prioritize can become intriguing to your cat. Have you ever wondered why?

We all know that cats are notoriously curious.; Maybe your cat feels that he must know what has caught and held your attention. If whatever it is holds enough interest for you, he might also be engaged. Cats are master micro-managers. They like to have their paws into everything. You are a part of your cats environment, so he feels a natural interest in things that you are interested in.

Since animals depend on the accessibility of their resources, they have to be able to prioritize value. If there is an object that is valued enough to attract you, it becomes instantly higher value to your cat because you are the trendsetter in your home. After all, you do provide food, shelter and protection to your cat and she knows it.

The next time you want to lift your cat off of the keyboard, take a minute to play with him and show him that he is more important than anything else you might need to do. It will be good for you both.

Are You Letting Your Cat Walk All Over You

  • 14/02/2017

I lay here, unable to move, barely able to stretch my legs for fear of waking a sleeping pile of purring fur at my legs. My neck feels contorted, head shoved off the pillow, and then I open my eyes staring nose to nose at my oldest cat, me graciously accepting a raspy tongue for a second or two. Well wasnt that a good nights sleep?!

Our cats;are always hogging our space, wanting to be with us, everywhere. Like many cat people, we practice an open door policy for the bathroom. Theres one cat asleep on the mat next to the shower, theres another looking curiously from his basin bed. I have accepted that cat hair, like invisible floating snowflakes, will always mysteriously land on my mascara wand when applying makeup. This is the complete cat package, one that we would never give up for the world.

Then I wonder where the myth originated from. That myth that cats are aloof. They are not as transparent as dogs and do not wear their hearts on their sleeves, or rather, paws. But they always appear on cue, following your every move, without too much noise or fuss. There they come, walking all over you, literally: walking on your chest when lying down, walking on your laptop, your newspaper, your fresh laundry, your dirty laundry, on your back when youre yoga planking. The list goes on. They are even walking over our iPads loaded with an exciting array of games for cats.

How do I love thee kitty? Let me count the ways

Happy Valentines day!
