What Clay Clumping Litters We Don’t Recommend
- Arm & Hammer Unscented Multi-Cat Litter: Although it is advertised as unscented, this litter has a light laundry detergent odor. It formed solid clumps but was the dustiest of all of the litters we tested.
- Pioneer Pet Smart Cat Lightweight Clumping Litter: This lightweight, unscented litter absorbs liquid and clumps well, but the moisture that escaped to mix with clay at the bottom of the pan was surprisingly challenging to remove.
- Cat’s Pride Scented Bacterial Odor Control Multi-Cat Litter: The litter produced very little dust and clumped reasonably well, but it didn’t capture all of the liquid, leaving wet clay stuck to the bottom of the pan. It also has a light soapy scent.
- Arm & Hammer Cloud Control Litter: Arm & Hammer’s Cloud Control was the least absorbent litter out of the nine clay varieties, although what liquid it absorbed clumped solidly. A heavy litter perfumed with a light laundry scent, Cloud Control is, at the very least, dust-free.
What Should You Consider Before Choosing The Best Litter For Your Cat
The first thing that you must ensure before buying a cat litter is to analyze its property of controlling the odor. There are many varieties of litters available in the market that claim excellent odor control. Several clay litters come with scented versions to entice the cats to make use of litter pans. Also, biodegradable alternatives offer natural fragrances to make it even more likely for your cat to pee/poop in the litter tray only.
The second thing worth considering is the dust variant of a cat litter. If you are much concerned with the amount of dust your cat might lay on the surrounding surfaces while hopping on and off the litter tray, then you must closely analyze the dust properties of the litter.Numerous brands claim their litter to be dust-free, but it is your job to make the best choice among them. For instance, it has been widely seen that the clay litter scatter more than the biodegradable ones. If keeping your surfaces clean is your top priority, consider the much-grounded cat pans like silicon gel litter.
Price is also an important factor that will help you to determine the choice of cat litter. For instance, non-clumping litters are on the lower end as compared to the clumping ones. If you have a tight budget, then you must lay your hands on natural litters over the processed ones.
How Did We Choose
While many of the products we review on All About Cats are made, sold, and tested in the United States, we do our best to give our Canadian cat lovers some love.
The products weve chosen have all been tested and thoroughly reviewed by yours truly. We normally like to include picks from both Chewy and Amazon, but because Chew doesnt currently ship to Canada, weve limited our selections to those available on Amazon.
In creating this list, we included the tried-and-true products that make it into our top 10 lists year after year. Weve also aimed to include a variety of types of litter from lightweight and silica litters to all-natural, biodegradable litters.

Dr Elseys Precious Cat Ultra Unscented Clumping Clay Cat Litter
Dr. Elseys Precious Cat ULTRA claims to be the litter cats love. It could be, but we dont think its the litter that cat owners love. Mostly, this is due to lackluster odor control. In our estimation, odor control is one of the most important features of any cat litter. Unfortunately, Dr. Elseys litter falls short in that department. Maybe its because this is an unscented formula, but whatever the reason, it doesnt mask foul odors and wont stop the litterbox scent from filling up the room in which its contained.
Of course, theres still plenty here to praise. This litter does clump very well, forming hard clumps that are strong enough for easy removal. Additionally, this seems to be a very low-dust litter, so you wont have to deal with worsening respiratory conditions or excess dust clouds to manage. And while its not the cheapest option, Dr. Elseys ULTRA litter is at least priced reasonably.
Great for multi-cat households, the Frisco Multi-Cat clay cat litter is one of the more affordable litters weve seen. It clumps well, creating hard clumps that make for easy scooping. Surprisingly, even though its an unscented formula, this litter manages to neutralize odors quickly, even if the smell containment isnt as long-lasting as other litters.
- Odor control isnt the best
- Extremely expensive for cat litter
Is Clumping Litter Safe For Kittens
There are horror stories about cats eating clumping litter and having it form clumps inside their stomachs, but this isnt something most people need to worry about, said Medley. If your cat is eating litter, take them to the vet: It could be a sign of anemia or pica, the desire to eat things that are not food. Plus, in small quantities, sodium bentonite isnt dangerous for animalsits even an ingredient in some animal feed.
Some people are especially worried about kittens eating clumping litter, because kittens have smaller stomachs and may be more curious. Though some brands recommend using non-clumping litters until your kitten is 4 months old or so, others, like Cats Pride, note that theres no evidence that sodium bentonite has actually caused harm to a kitten this is a conclusion supported by vets Medley and Lund, as well as by everything we found when scanning the literature and reading many Internet forums. In my 7 years experience as a vet Ive not seen a foreign body from a kitten who has ingested clay clumping litter, said Lund. If youre concerned and would still like to use clumping clay litter, monitor your kittens behavior and check in with your vet if something seems amiss.

Purina Tidy Cats Pure Nature Cedar Pine & Corn Clumping Cat Litter
This cat litter is made of cedar, pine, and corn, not just corn alone, and seems to get a lot of glowing reviews from pet parents. I really want to try this one, and its the only litter on the list besides Worlds Best I think I may actually really like to use. Some say its really great for odour control, but poor at clumping compared to alternatives, so Id definitely stick to Worlds Best in theory. Thats because Avery doesnt create odour problems in the kitty loo but he does dig a lot, so Id prefer a stronger clump if/when possible. Im still curious to know how it stacks up, however.
All Worlds Best Cat Litter Reviews
This is a listing of all Worlds Best Cat Litters that have been reviewed and we also list what we think are the best Worlds Best Cat Litters with our internal ranking system. Worlds Best Cat Litter has a very unique name that makes a very demonstrative statement. While defining what the best cat litter in the world is might be quite difficult, they do offer some pretty good competition.
They believe their edge comes from their patented process that compresses naturally absorbent corn into concentrated granules that give it a significant odor trapping edge while also forming great clumps. Either special features such as being lightweight, flushable, etc. only add to their arsenal of justifications for why they are the best.
Their selection is somewhat small, however, with only 6 litters being produced, all of which are based around their corn with individual products including other materials such as pine. We welcome you to try some of their products out and see if they are, in fact, the best cat litters in the world!

Sustainability And Cat Litter
Heres what you need to know to keep your cat healthy and safe while lessening cat litters impact on the environment.
In this guide, we recommend clay cat litter above other categories for several practical reasons: It is widely available, its relatively inexpensive, it tracks less, and its easy to scoop. Plus, we found that most cats love the texture of clay litter beneath their paws. Clay cat litter is usually made from bentonite clay, which is often mined in a process that experts say can have environmental implications. According to National Geographic, surface mining displaces local wildlife, erodes soil, creates acid mine drainage, and leaks toxic elements. And even though clay comes from the ground, its not biodegradable.
Alternative forms of cat litter impact the environment, too. The raw materials for cat litter made with corn, paper, and wheat takea lot of water to produce, and they are often made with GMO crops or are treated with pesticides.
The only way to properly dispose of dirty litter is to secure it in a bag for municipal waste management to send to a landfill. Its not a zero-waste solution, but its the safest option because the US Environmental Protection Agency describes pet waste as a pollutant. That means no matter what kind of litter you buyincluding flushable corn cat litter or silica gelyou shouldnt flush it down the toilet or compost it. You should throw it in the trash.
Andre Prefers World’s Best Cat Litter
Ever since we rescued our Maine Coon from our local animal shelter, we’ve used nothing but World’s Best Cat litter.
He has absolutely no problem with it. I scoop it as soon as Andre does his business, there’s no odor, no dust & no mess.
My only con, is the high price, but in the long run, it’s a small price to pay for it’s convenience, lack of noticeable dust & natural ingredients.

The Best Cat Litter Is Affordable
Depending on what type you choose, you could end up forking over $70 $200 per year in cat litter expenditures. When you consider that a humans annual toilet paper expenses are low as $15 and usually dont exceed $50, cat litter starts to look a bit pricey.
That being said, dont think you need to choose an expensive litter box filler. The most affordable litter is often the best. You might even be better off using soil from your backyard rather than spending big bucks on premium litter.
Many cat litter shoppers explain that they save money by buying cat litter in bulk or from store brands like Chewys Frisco and Petcos So Phresh.

JustAnswerveterinarian Dwight Alleyne is a fan. Ingredients: What To Look And Look Out For
Worlds Best Cat Litter is among the new generation of clumping, dust-free cat litter, and certainly the least environmentally offensive of all. Toxic litters are made from a variety of ingredients: corn, corncob, cornhusks, wheat by-products, wheatgrass, beet pulp, oat hulls, and kenaf. Worlds Best Cat Litter is made from cornwhole kernel corn, in fact.
I would stay away from wheat-grass and beet pulp litters, as they don’t control odor very well. Kenaf is what’s used to make tree-free paper and is related to cotton. I’ve had the privilege of using many of these and have been quite pleased with their clumping ability. Like the crystal litters, these don’t weigh very much, which is a definite advantage for some.

Excellent Product But Expensive
Awhile back I found a coupon for a free bag of this World’s Best Cat Litter. I’d never heard of it before so was surprised when I found it at the local pet store. I got my free bag and was off to see how the cats would like it. It’s a great litter. It’s very absorbent and easy to clean out of the box. Not sticking to the bottom like many others do. Extremely low in dust and provides a really nice fragrance. I’ve tried both the red and the purple bags. Not really sure what the differences are in them, because they both work very well. My only complaint with this litter is the price. It’s very expensive for a very small amount of litter. But it works great! I cannot afford to buy it on a regular basis because I rescue cats and would definitely be blowing the budget if I had to buy 140lbs of this litter a month at their prices. I do always take advantage of any coupons I receive for it and have found the makers of the World’s Best Cat Litter really care about their customers. I receive emails regularly from them and usually always includes a coupon or even another offer for a free bag. They do allow you 1 free bag a year now. If I only had 1 or 2 cats to buy litter for, this would be my number 1 choice! It really is that good!
