Dont Make Behavior Assumptions

Its a common misconception that cats are simply little dogs. If you decide to adopt a cat, its critical to learn about the unique behaviors and needs of your new pet, from training to socialization to enrichment.

The biggest mistake we see is people treating cats like dogs, says Dr. Fulcher. They are cats, and learning about cat behavior helps cater to their needs.

The more you understand about common cat behavior quirks, the better prepared youll be to enjoy your new companion.

Can I Bring My Dog With Me To Meet Other Dogs Before We Decide To Adopt

For many years we conducted dog-to-dog introductions, but we no longer offer them because we have found that they are not indicative of how the dogs interact outside of the building. Shelters are full of sounds, smells, and distractions, so the dogs werent able to get a true feel for the other dogs personality. In instances where in-shelter introductions didnt go well, it prohibited that dog from going to a family they may have otherwise been comfortable with if they were introduced in a less stressful environment. On the flip side, positive introductions at the shelter could give the family a false sense of security causing them to let their guard down in the first few critical days at their home. For that reason, weve eliminated in-shelter introductions and instead focus on counseling families so they have all the tools they need to facilitate successful introductions at home.

Tuxedo Cat Rehoming Services

Need to Rehome your Tuxedo cat? If you own a Tuxedo cat or kitten and are no longer able to care for him, Pet Adoptions Network offers expert guidance in finding the perfect home for your cherished cat..

Through our proven method for finding new homes for pre-loved cats, you and your pet will stay safe, happy and healthy while our cat rehoming team presents your cat with both pros and cons, ensuring that we attract the right person or family with the type of home environment, schedule, activity level and commitment.

We then screen potential adopters for your pet with a background and references check. This helps to make sure that your cat goes to the right home not to folks that are unable to offer what your cat needs and deserves.

We know that rehoming your Tuxedo cat is a very stressful and heartbreaking situation for you and your family. We shield you from unkind comments from judgmental people by keeping your identity and information private. Potential adopters will deal only with our staff initially, and will only know your identity when you call them to arrange a meet up.

Our rehoming coordinators will walk you through our process for making the decision on a candidate, making contact, and then setting up a meeting where both you and the prospective adopters get to know each other, they meet your dog, and both parties then take a day or two to decide if an adoption should proceed.

Earning Your Stray Cats Trust

Some stray cats will be friendly right off the bat, but with others, it may take time and patience to establish trust. If a cat is not comfortable with humans, they will mostly scratch or bite if you attempt to handle them. Go slow and always allow the cat a way to leave the situation so that they don’t feel cornered, says Gouge.

You need to have time, and you need have patience. The cat will come to you when hes ready. If you try to force it, he will run, Fernandez says.

The main way into your new feline friends heart is through his stomach. Food is critical, Phillips says. Start approaching the cat slowly, over several days or even weeks. Eventually, youll be able to get pretty close without scaring him off.

Pick The Right Food And Feeding Setup

How to Adopt a Cat or Kitten

Look for wide, shallow feeding bowls that won’t disturb their highly sensitive whiskers at meal time, advises Lambert Wang, co-founder of Cat Person. And because cats are obligate carnivores, meat is the name of the game. “Feed your new friend a high-quality diet that has high amounts of animal protein, moderate amounts of fat, and a limited amount of carbohydrates,” Wang says. While dry food can be more convenient, wet food helps your cat get enough water, since cats often prefer to play with water over actually drinking it. A mix of protein flavors and formats will give their diet a little variety, as well as cultivate a more varied palate in kittens, in particular. Besides, you wouldn’t want to eat the same thing every day. Neither will they.

Can I Place A Hold On An Animal I See On The Website

While we work extremely hard to make our animals as comfortable as possible, studies show that the longer an animal is in a shelter environment, the higher their risk of increased stress and illness. For that reason, we operate on a first-come, first-served basis and are not able to accept phone holds. If you see someone who interests you on our website, please stop on in at your earliest convenience!

Get The Goods You Need

Before you bring home a cat, get your place ready for its arrival. In addition to food and litter , you’ll need to create a happy, safe environment for your new furry friend. Put away precarious tchotchkes cats love to knock things off ledges. Look for exposed wires, poisonous plants, or unsecured furniture that could injure a curious kitty if they topple it. Equip your space with at least one scratching post and a cat tree for climbing, especially if you don’t want to find a kitten on top of your kitchen cabinets. You’ll also want to get them cat toys to keep them occupied, or DIY it for a fun weekend project.

Also make sure you get a veterinarian lined up. The shelter or rescue organization may already have a relationship with one, or be able to make a recommendation.

Free To A Great Home Adoption Program

The Free To A Great Home emergency adoption program was introduced in the summer 2005 to provide an incentive to adopt adult cats facing euthanasia due to a lack of space during the crowded summer months. The program was a runaway success, completely eliminating euthanasia among cats for space . It also led to record adoptions among both cats and dogs thanks to the press coverage and public attention the program received, as well as the first decrease in the rate of euthanasia in our shelters history. It also received a Best Industry Practice for Adoption Programs Award from the American Humane Association.

How the program works:

  • Interested adopters go through a diligent adoption screening process.
  • If approved for adoption, the animal they are interested in may be adopted at no charge.
  • Adopters receive all the same benefits and responsibilities as regular adopters.
  • Also, any cat or dog which has been up for adoption for eight weeks or more may be adopted at no charge through the Free To A Great Home program.

Humane Pennsylvania hopes that this expanded program will help even more pets find their forever homes.

Adopt A Kitten For Free

All other major animal welfare charities charge a fee for adoption, including the RSPCA, Dogs Trust and Blue Cross. Is The Fee You Charge The Same At Every Branch Or Centre

Fees vary from each branch or centre. This is because some branches have to pay more for veterinary treatments than others, and may have higher costs when looking after cats. Wherever you adopt your cat from Cats Protection, your cat will have received dedicated love, care and attention to allow them to be ready for their new home.

Every cat from every branch and centre will have received a health check, flea, roundworm and tapeworm treatments and at least one vaccination against cat flu and enteritis. They will also have been neutered and microchipped. While your fee doesn’t cover all of these costs, it does help towards paying them.

Transitioning A Stray Cat To Your Home

Adopt a cat or kitten for free through the weekend at Indy Animal Care Services

Before transitioning your stray cat into your care, you will want to make sure you have all the right cat supplies.

According to Delgado, if your new feline friend was previously a house cat, the transition indoors should be relatively easy.

If a cat is hanging out on your back porch, shes probably lived inside before and is socialized to interact with people. In this case, Delgado recommends earning the kittys trust with food and then providing necessities indoors. This includes a cat litter box, a place to snuggle up, and food and water. and a cozy environment will help the cat transition into this new life, she notes.

However, if the stray is a feral cat, this process will take a littleor a lotmore time. You have to gradually increase their comfort by associating your presence with something they really likeusually food, she says.

Delgado says, You absolutely dont want to trap these cats and bring them inside overnight right away. That can be frightening and stressful, as well as detrimental to your long-term goal of turning your stray into a house pet.

To start the process of bringing a feral cat inside, you can put out a cat bowl full of wet food, and then sit near it while the cat eats, moving the bowl closer to you over time until you are able to pet or scratch the cat while he eats. It could also involve a similar process with cat treats. Whatever whets your new cats appetite should be your go-to.

How You Know Youve Been Adopted By A Stray Cat

When a cat starts coming around your house and looking for attention, begging for food or trying to sneak in your front door, theres a good chance youve been adopted, explains Megan Phillips, BS, ADBC.

Phillips is a cofounder of Train With Trust, a Colorado Springs-based company that offers personalized behavior solutions for owners of all types of animals. And if you start leaving food out, theres no question. That cat will keep coming back.

Phillips does note, however, that not all cats that come around begging are necessarily stray cats. She suggests that some cats may be indoor/outdoor cats that belong to a neighbor something about your yard or area.

Elise Gouge, a certified dog and cat behavior consultant and owner of Pet Behavior Consulting, LLC in Granby, Massachusetts, notes that while you may feel special that a cat has chosen your yard as her new hangout spot, she might have other adoptees in your area. Some cats are good at making the neighborhood rounds and having several friends they like to visit, she says.

Before assuming that a cat wants to adopt you, you should check to see if hes wearing a cat ID tag or bring him to a nearby animal hospital or rescue group to have him scanned for a microchip. If the cat has an owner, it is your responsibility to make a genuine effort to reunite cat and owner.
