Best Friends Animal Society, a collection of no-kill animal shelters, and other shelters across Utah are celebrating Black Cat Appreciation Day on Tuesday in an effort to bring Utah closer to become a no-kill state.

SALT LAKE CITY Best Friends Animal Society, a collection of no-kill animal shelters, and other shelters across Utah are celebrating Black Cat Appreciation Day on Tuesday in an effort to bring Utah closer to become a no-kill state.

Black Cat Appreciation Day was created in an effort to recognize black cats who are often overlooked in shelters and rescues. A study investigating “black cat bias” found that black cats experience the highest euthanasia and lowest adoption rates compared to cats of other colors.

Temma Martin, with Best Friends Animal Society, said that celebrating black cats by adopting them or posting pictures of them on social media could help combat that bias, and possibly bring Utah closer to becoming a no-kill state. The state is about 800 animals shy of the title.

An Older Man Coaxed The Cat From His Kennel And Left The Store With Him

PetSmart security footage captured a man stealing a cat from an animal adoption area on Saturday, January 29, 2022.

A cat was stolen from a local PetSmart adoption area Saturday morning.

Employees at the store at 389 W. 1830 South said a man came to the store about 10 a.m. asking about adopting a cat, according to an email from a volunteer with the Community Animal Welfare Society. After they told him hed need to fill out an application, the man walked over to the cat kennels, coaxed a cat out and left the store with him.

Bosco, a black cat up for adoption by CAWS, was stolen from a Salt Lake City PetSmart on January 29.

The volunteer wrote that the cat, named Bosko, is about a year old with a black coat. The rescue has recently encountered several disturbing issues with cats and kittens being abused and killed, so they are concerned for the cats safety.

Bosko is usually friendly, and the rescue suspects he was likely a house cat before he was dumped with a feral cat colony. CAWS was fostering him until he found a permanent home.

The man was caught on camera at the PetSmart location, and anyone who recognizes him should contact to Salt Lake police at 801-799-3000 and CAWS at Boscos microchip number is 9810200435000214.
