Your kitten grows fast. Hell reach adolescence much sooner than a human child. From birth to about 6 months of age, your feline is officially a kitten then, as he enters puberty, he leaves kittenhood behind. From here until his 6th birthday, hes considered a young adult.
Hold on, cat parent, because the ride becomes wild now. If you dont plan to neuter him, expect him to display all the signs of sexual maturity. If you do get him neutered, hell still become an adult cat but wont enter sexual maturity. Neutering your male kitten before he reaches 6 months of age means you may not need to deal with any of his sexual acting out. If he still mounts a female cat its because his brain is hard-wired and he enjoys doing so. Relax. He cant get her pregnant because his testes have been removed.
Some Missing Cats Are Found In Sheds And Garages
One of our cats went missing a few years ago. After the first night, we scoured the neighborhood, posting leaflets through doors asking people to check their sheds, garages, and other outbuildings.
After the second night, we traipsed around the same areas calling his name.
We were lucky to hear him meow from inside someones garage but then had to wait several hours for them to come home from work to release him.
The owners of the garage had actually opened their garage the day before to see if he was in there but he had obviously hidden from them and missed his chance to escape.

These examples go to show that when they are scared, cats will conceal themselves and miss opportunities to be rescued.
Month 1: Your Kitten Is Almost An Adult Cat
Almost a year of growth has occurred already and now your kitten is just about full grown. It is sexually mature, eating adult cat food, has received all of its vaccinations, and you are consistently working on its social skills and training. It is equivalent to a teenage human at this point, so while it still has some mental maturing to do, it looks like an adult cat.

Don’t give up if the first encounters are not positive. Older cats can take time to acclimate to a younger cat. However, a young Maine Coon who is struggling to keep weight on could probably benefit from remaining on kitten food until they are 2 years old or even longer. How quickly your kitten reaches his full size depends on how big he is going to get. The bigger his breed, the longer it will take him to be fully grown. Kittens typically stop growing by the age of 12 months.1 However, larger breeds like Maine Coons can take up to two years to reach their full size. Growth typically slows significantly after 12 months, with a fast growth spurt occurring in the first eight weeks.2
It’s worth noting that most cats will reach sexual maturity before they are fully grown. This is similar to a teenager going through puberty, which happens when a kitten is six to nine months of age.3 Around this time, you might consider spaying or neutering your cat. A male cat can father kittens before he’s fully grown, and a female cat can get pregnant before she’s fully grown as well.
Month : Transition Your Kitten To Adult Cat Food
Making the switch from kitten to adult food can occur at any time now. This transition should be a slow one though, and careful thought should go into which adult food you want to feed your kitten.
Be sure to choose a high-quality, meat-based adult cat food for your kitten. Your veterinarian may have specific brand recommendations for you but otherwise, look for a major brand that is formulated for adult cats and has the AAFCO seal on the package. These things all indicate that the food is a good choice. Major food brands have quality control, customer service, veterinarians on staff, and high-quality ingredients. Generic or store-brand foods may have lower quality ingredients and do not provide proper nutrition to your kitten. The food you choose should also list meat as the first ingredient since cats are carnivores.
Slowly mix the remaining kitten food you have with the new adult cat food. Allow there to eventually be more adult cat food then there is kitten food. This transition should take at least a week to decrease the likelihood of dietary-induced diarrhea and during this time, you should also monitor your kitten’s appetite to ensure it’s still eating the adult food and not just picking out the kitten food.

First, lets talk about the average cat. Most reach 18 inches tall and weigh about 10 pounds when full size. Most domestic cats like Tabbies and Siamese will grow to adult size in one year. But theres a lot of growth and a few life stages before you get there!
Lets dive in!
Newborn to 6 months old: This is the most rapid growth stage. Your kitten will go from newborn , to feisty, curious kittens wreaking havoc in the house.
Kittens will gain rapid weight during this time. A kitten will gain 0.25 0.5 lbs per week in those early weeks until they have doubled their birth weight by weeks 10-12.
This is also the time that socialization is important. To keep your kitten from becoming aloof, lots of interaction and love are key. Feral kittens dont have any socialization with humans, and it explains why they prefer to avoid us.
In this stage, kittens are fluffy, with downy fur, round faces, big toe beans , and enormous eyes. They have sharp, tiny teeth, and small, delicate bones. Theyre also very active and playful. They lose their baby teeth around 10 weeks. By 6 months they have their adult teeth. Their facial features will become more prominent and sleek around 3-6 months.
This is your cats adolescent stage. They may be rebellious, rambunctious, and constantly on the go. Theyve grown into a lanky stage, and depending on the activity level, can look lean. Trust me, they will grow into their frame as they mature.

When Can A Cat Go Outside
It is best to keep your kitten indoors until they are 6 months, however much they are trying to escape to get outside. Its essential that they have been vaccinated and neutered before allowing them unsupervised access.
