How To Build Immunity To Cat Allergies

How Do I Know If I Have A Cat Allergy

How to Get Rid of Pet Allergies | Stephen Dreskin, MD, PhD, Allergy and Immunology | UCHealth

Although the symptoms of a cat allergy may seem fairly obvious, it’s not always the cat that causes them. It’s a good idea to get confirmation from your doctor. After all, you wouldn’t want to blame Mr. Whiskers unjustly.

Your doctor can do a skin or blood test to see if you’re allergic. However, allergy tests aren’t always correct the doctor may also want you to try living without a cat for a few months to see how it affects your allergy symptoms.

Lower The Stress Level

Your cat can also suffer from stress. High stress can lower your cats bodily defenses, so you need to take steps to keep your cats stress level to a minimum.

Maintain a safe and caring environment, so that your cat does not feel lonely or stressed. Do not take your cat to overcrowded places, as it can raise the stress level.

Also, poor sanitation and poor ventilation increases exposure to pathogens and puts stress on your cats system. Keep the surrounding area clean, as we all know that cats hate living in unhygienic environments.

Most importantly, treat your cat as a family member, giving him love and care.

Scientists Seek To Reduce Peoples Urge To Sneeze

Up to 20 percent of people one in every five may be allergic to cats. But scientists are working on solutions so that these individuals can get their kitty cuddles.

Time magazines list of BestInventions of 2006 included an unusual creation. It wasnt a gadget it was acat.

Love cats but your nose doesnt? the magazineasked. A San Diego company is breeding felines that are naturallyhypoallergenic. There was a 15-month waiting list for these sniffleproofkitties, which sold for $3,950 or more.

The company selling the cats was Allerca. It hadtapped into a tantalizing dream for allergy-prone cat lovers. Just two genes are responsible for making cats a problem for many people. It thereforeseemed like a no-brainer to engineer cats that lacked those genes or tosimply breed cats with versions of the genes that made the animals lessallergenic.

But so far, itchy-eyed cat lovers have been leftdisappointed.

Explainer: What are allergies?

But for all those who havent given up hope, there may be new options around the corner. An allergic owner might pop open acan of allergy-fighting food for the cat. Or maybe vaccinate the cat toproduce fewer allergens. And allergy shots for owners might shift from weeklyor monthly injections to a shot that offers immediate relief.

Helpful Ways To Strengthen Your Immune System And Fight Off Disease

How can you improve your immune system? On the whole, your immune system does a remarkable job of defending you against disease-causing microorganisms. But sometimes it fails: A germ invades successfully and makes you sick. Is it possible to intervene in this process and boost your immune system? What if you improve your diet? Take certain vitamins or herbal preparations? Make other lifestyle changes in the hope of producing a near-perfect immune response?

Avoid Owning A High Number Of Cats

Having many cats indicates a higher concentration of allergens in the household. Meaning, the number of dander, dust, pollen, saliva, and urine will double or thrice in number.

If you are allergic to these types of allergens, then you may want to consider having multiple cats in your home.

One cat is enough for someone who has a cat allergy. Otherwise, you’ll be giving yourself a hard time treating your allergic reactions.

Allergy Skin Prick Test

This test is performed in your doctors office so they can observe any reactions.

Using a clean needle, your doctor will prick your skins surface , and deposit a tiny amount of the allergen. Youll likely be tested for several allergens at the same time. Youll also be skin pricked with a control solution that has no allergens. Your doctor may number each prick to identify the allergen.

In about 15 to 20 minutes, the skin prick site may become red or swollen. This reaction confirms an allergy to that substance. A positive cat allergy will usually cause a red, itchy bump to the cat allergen. These unpleasant effects generally go away 30 minutes after the test.

Coping With Pets In The Home

“We have a three-pronged approach,” says Georgeson. “First is avoidance. “You need to limit the areas of the home where the animal is allowed, primarily the bedroom and the bed. Don’t forget how much time we spend breathing and touching things in that room.”

“Shut the bedroom door,” Johnson says.

Other tips:

  • Buy a HEPA filter. All three physicians recommended this. HEPA filters can be portable or home-wide.
  • Remove dander-trapping carpets. “Install tile or wood that can be cleaned thoroughly,” Georgeson advises.
  • Wash bedding frequently in hot water . Washing flushes away dander that has settled on the bedding.
  • In some cases, consider closing off house-wide ducts to the bedroom and using portable heating and cooling.
  • Do not allow the pet in the car or use washable seat covers.

How Do Allergy Shots Help

%$?# Allergies!

Allergy shots help the body build immunity to specific allergens, so it’s not as bothered by them. Allergy shots also can help kids who have allergies andasthma have fewer asthma flare-ups.

Allergy shots contain a tiny amount of a purified form of the allergen causing problems. Doctors increase the dose slowly over the first 36 months. This lets the immune system safely adjust and build immunity to the allergens. This is called the buildup phase.

The highest effective safe dose becomes a child’s monthly maintenance dose. Health care providers give this to the child for about 3 to 5 years. Most kids will need fewer shots over time.

Some kids’ allergy symptoms ease during the buildup phase. Others don’t feel better until they’re into the maintenance phase. After years of getting allergy shots, some may have lasting relief from symptoms.

How To Live With A Pet Allergy Without Getting Rid Of Your Pet

Allergies are the sixth leading cause of chronic disease in the U.S. and approximately half of all Americans test positive for at least one of the 10 most common allergens, including cat allergies, according to a profile from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases .

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America reports that about 15-30 percent of people with allergies have allergic reactions to cats and dogs. With more than 100 million pets in the United States this leads to high allergy morbidity as people are exposed to animal allergens when visiting friends and family or even in public spaces like schools and offices.

While it will require some extra work, it is possible to live with a pet allergy and continue to keep your animal as a member of the family. Pet allergies are caused by reactions to proteins found in the pet’s skin cells, saliva, or urine and are usually triggered when people are exposed to these proteins. While dog and cat allergies are the most common, any pet can cause allergies. It can be difficult for some people to determine whether the symptoms they are expecting are a common cold or if they are actually allergic to dogs or cats.

Pet allergy symptoms include nasal congestion, runny nose, itchy eyes, sneezing, and sometimes wheezing or difficulty breathing.

First, the person should look at changing their environment.

What Is Anaphylactic Shock

Anaphylactic shock, also called anaphylaxis, is a severe, life-threatening reaction to certain allergens. Body tissues may swell, including tissues in the throat. Anaphylactic shock is also characterized by a sudden drop in blood pressure. The following are the most common symptoms of anaphylactic shock. However, each person may experience symptoms differently. Other symptoms may include:

  • Itching and hives over most of the body

  • Feeling warm

  • Swelling of the throat and tongue or tightness in throat

  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath

  • Dizziness

Cat Seasonal Allergy Symptoms

The following signs are good indicators of seasonal allergies in cats.

  • Excessive scratching, licking or chewing
  • Red patches on skin
  • Swollen eyes
  • Coughing

Cat seasonal allergy symptoms are extremely similar to allergy symptoms from other types of allergens, like food or fleas, so its important to take your cat to the vet if shes displaying the above signs to get a proper diagnosis.

People, especially kids, may not even know they are allergic. The proteins cause the body to produce histamines, which result in sudden eye itches, wheezy breathing, or a rash.

Children can be declared to be prone to colds and not allergic. Children can also be diagnosed as asthmatic, and pets can exacerbate asthma.

Allergies can be hereditary. If you had asthmatic bronchitis a lot as a child, you may develop a cat allergy later in life. “No one is born with an allergy,” Johnson points out, “they develop in some people from exposure.”

Interestingly, according to Johnson, there is “very compelling information” that children exposed to animals before their immune systems are fully formed at age 2 are unlikely to become allergic.

Of course, such symptoms can result from other causes. Ask your doctor about a test for pet allergies.

Dont Use Chemical Treatments

It is common for cats to suffer from ticks or fleas, especially if they spend time outdoors. To handle such problems, owners often end up buying some shampoo or other chemical-based product.

Use of such commercial products in excess can harm your cats immunity. The chemicals in them are often harmful for your cats health and can cause several side effects.

So when trying to get rid of fleas, look for natural options. Moreover, maintain hygiene by regularly bathing your pet with natural soap and shampoo, vacuuming your home thoroughly and frequently, and keeping your cat in a clean environment.

Visit Friends Who Owns Cat Frequently

After getting rid of the allergens inside your house, exposing yourself to cats frequently help in building your tolerance with them.

If your friend owns a cat, you can ask them if you could visit them from time to time. Make sure to drink an allergy medication thirty minutes first before the time of visit.

However, if you’re hesitant about the effectiveness of the medication, ask your friend if you could use allergy relief spray or wipes on the cat.

Once you’re inside their house, wait for the cat to initiate contact. It might take an hour or so to do so, especially if the cat is not familiar with you yet.

Some cats don’t even do it, as they prefer to observe you first.

Nonetheless, the first visit should be at least 20 minutes long. It’s to ensure that you’ve established your identity towards the cat. If you have your allergies under control, you can even put them on your lap.

The next visit should be the same cat you held from the first visit. This time, you can stay for at least half an hour, after that you can start visiting your other friends with cats.

You might find these routines tiring, but it is a small price to pay if you want to own a cat.

Can Cats Have Seasonal Allergies

Like humans, cats can have seasonal allergies which just means theyre allergic to things in their environment that change with the seasons, like pollen.

Seasonal allergies are due to airborne pollens and this can vary greatly with regional changes, Dr. Harbour told The Dodo.

Usually, if a cat has seasonal allergies, shes allergic to multiple things in her environment and not just one thing.

Typically it is not one to two things they are reacting to, but 10-plus environmental allergens, Dr. Harbour said.

Add Apple Cider Vinegar To Your Cats Water

Mayo Clinic Minute: Why allergies shouldn’t prevent kids from having pets

Apple cider vinegar is an effective treatment for any kind of allergies in cats.

It has antibacterial and mild antibiotic properties that make it great for a wash that can remove irritants from your cats skin. In addition to removing allergens, it also boosts your cats immunity.

  • Add ½ teaspoon of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar to your cats water bowl.
  • Another option is to mix ¼ teaspoon of apple cider vinegar into your cats food twice a day.
  • Just mix apple cider vinegar and water in equal amounts and either spray or dab the mixture onto the problem areas.

When An Allergist Diagnoses A Patient With A Pet Allergy The First Line Of Defense Sounds So Simple: Avoidance

The most effective way to control a pet allergy is to not spend time around the animals that make your body go haywire. The reality is, many people consider their pets part of the family and will do anything to keep them home where they belong. There are some steps that can help manage the allergy without sending Spot or Fifi to live with Granny.

Myth #: People Are Allergic To Cat Hair

If you are allergic to cats, just the sight of a pile of cat hair might have you reaching for a handful of tissues and a bottle of eyedrops. Although a shedding cat can cause allergies to flare up, its not the hair itself but rather the dander that clings to the hair that causes people to sniffle and sneeze.

In addition to cat dander being a culprit, people with cat allergies are also allergic to the protein, Fel d 1, produced in your cats saliva and urine. While all cats produce Fel d 1 differently, female cats reportedly make less of the protein than males, and light-colored cats may produce less of the allergy-inducing protein than dark-colored cats.

Contrary to the assumption that long-haired cats may be more allergic than short-haired cats, cats with long hair may give off fewer allergens as it stays in the hair more than cats with short hair.

Knowing If Your Parents Are Allergy

If you never had pets growing up, and don’t typically experience allergies yourself, it could be helpful to look to your parents for insight. According to Dr. Parikh, “Allergies are a bit of a lottery, but there is a very strong genetic component. Having even one parent with an allergy increases your risk of having allergies. Having two parents can increase your risk almost six-fold.”

One caveat: You’re more likely to have allergies in general if your parents do, too, but you won’t necessarily be allergic to the same things.

The new gene-editing tool CRISPR/Cas9 might even come to the rescue. This technology might deliver the ultimate dream to those who can afford it: a cat that doesnt produce allergens at all. One company has made some progress applying CRISPR/Cas9 to cats.

Success in taming cat allergies might even bringgood news for people whose allergies have nothing to do with cats. If any ofthe cat allergyfighting measures prove safe and effective, they might bedeployed against other allergens. They could prove especially useful against airborneones like pollen, dog dander or dust mites. Up to 30 percent of the worldspopulation suffers from allergens in the air. So thats plenty of runny nosesto dry up.

Explainer: What are proteins?

When it comes to cat allergies, the main culpritis Fel d1. This small protein is produced primarily in cats salivary andsebaceous glands. Fel d1 is found in flakes of dead skin, or dander. It isspread to hair when a cat licks itself. Thus its not cat hair that people areallergic to, just hair coated in cat spit.

A singular target

All this uncertainty has made allergies to catsdifficult to tackle. For now, options are limited. People can takeantihistamines and other medications to reduce symptoms. But such drugs dontstop the allergy.

Myth #: There Are Allergen

Technically, there are hypo-allergenic cats, but there is no cat that is completely free from allergy-producing proteins. Hypoallergenic cats are usually a better option for individuals who want to live with a cat but are allergic. Keep in mind these breeds may still cause you to cough, sneeze, and wheeze.

Grooming Your Cat To Lessen Cat Allergies

Grooming your cat is also another way to lessen the symptoms of cat allergies. Regular brushing of their fur reduces the amount of hair they shed and the number of hairballs they produce.

Thus, make it a habit to brush them now and then. It’s better to do this on your own so you can start building tolerance around your cat.

However, you still have to do some preventive measures such as wearing masks or gloves.

Fight Allergies By Controlling Your Surroundings

While it doesn’t necessarily help your body fight off seasonal allergies, creating an environment to minimize allergens is a good, medicine-free way to keep allergy symptoms at bay. This could include using an air conditioner for temperature control instead of opening a window or wearing protective gear when you must be outside. “When you’re gardening, use a mask to protect yourself as much as possible,” Dr. Leija advised. “Then when you come inside, wash your hair and change your clothing.”
