Natural Treatments For When A Cat Gets Fleas
- Bathing the cat in cool water with shampoo infused with natural flea-repelling agents, such as eucalyptus, lavender, cedar or citrus can be effective. Adding some Omega-3 fatty acids to the cats diet at this time is helpful in protecting its skin from drying out due to the shampoo.
- For cats that absolutely hate bathing, using a flea comb with a bowl of soapy water could do the trick. However, it can take more time than bathing and owners should be careful to get as close as possible to the skin, while not pulling on the cats hair.
- When a cat has had fleas, owners need to be very thorough in vacuuming and cleaning the house. Its also recommended to get the carpet professionally cleaned, wash all of the bedding that the cat has used and empty the vacuum at least weekly.
- Cat owners need to keep the yard clean of excessive dirt and debris, as this type of environment is typically a flea breeding ground. Planting herbs, including marigolds and eucalyptus may be helpful. Food grade diatomaceous can also help to keep fleas at bay naturally. However, it needs to be reapplied after rain. Heavy rains can actually help wash flea eggs away.
How To Prevent Your Cat From Having An Accident In The House
A while back, my cat Olivia, developed the unpleasant habit of going outside her litter box usually on my brand new bath mats. In her case, I was able to resolve the problem with a good enzymatic laundry pre-treatment and a few tweaks to her litter box.
Usually, if your cat is going outside the litter box, she is trying to tell you something. A trip to the vet can rule out any medical issues, like kidney disease or hyperthyroidism, that could contribute to accidents.
Once your cat has a clean bill of health, youll want to make sure that her litter box meets her needs. Otherwise, all of the cleaning in the world probably wont keep her from peeing where you dont want her to.
Our idea of a purr-fect litter box setup may not meet our cats exacting standards. Click here for expert tips on making your cats litter box a place shell want to visit. If you think your cat could use a little extra convincing, my favorite litter, Worlds Best Cat Litter, makes a litter especially for picky cats. It contains a safe, plant-based ingredient that naturally attracts cats to the litter box. How great is that?
Obviously, prevention is the best solution to a pesky cat pee problem, but even if your cat still has the occasional accident, the right cleaning routine will prevent it from becoming a habit.
Not So Fresh Clean The Ducts
If your house smells musty, check the air ducts and look for evidence of mold and other harmful bacteria. If you cant determine whether its mold, you can have a sample analyzed by a microbiology testing center for about $50, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.
The extra precaution could be worth it, since a duct cleaning could cost between $450 and $1,000, according to the EPA.
If you dont think your ducts need a cleaning, trap stinky bacteria by replacing the filters.

If Your Jerk Cat Peed On Your Clothes:
Time for a new cat. So. Rude.
But seriously, a common mis-cat-ception is cats confusing laundry baskets for litter boxes. Do not throw your cat pee clothes straight into the washing machine, no matter how tempting. If you do this, the odor will set and your clothes will be trashed. Think of the cat pee like itâs smallpox: The smell is super contagious and can be transferred to other clothes in the same laundry load and then youâll need a whole new wardrobe.
Stop and breathe.
Rinse the cat pee stain on your clothes with cold water and blot with towels, just like you would the floor or a piece of furniture. Remember to blot, do not scrub. Throw soiled clothes into a bucket with a ½ cup of oxygen bleach for 2-3 hours. Next, remove clothes and soak in a bath of vinegar and water . Add some baking soda directly to the stain, letting the mix sit for 10-15 minutes. Then and only then can you add the cat pee clothes to the washing machine, set to cold, and run without any detergent. Hang clothes to dry, as the heat from the dryer may still cause the odor to set.
If this seems like a lot of work to get rid of a stain, youâre not wrong. We would reserve this sort of care and diligence for your most cherished articles of clothing, otherwise, it just might be time to go shopping.
Vinegar And Baking Soda
Vinegar and baking soda are excellent household items for cleaning, and theyre especially good at combatting pet odors.
Start by mixing equal parts water and vinegar in a spray bottle. Before you put it to use, test the solution on a part of the carpet thats in an inconspicuous area, such as inside a closet. The vinegar shouldnt discolor the carpet, but its always best to be sure.
Next, wet the urine spots on the carpet using your spray bottle. They dont need to be soaked, so just spritz them until theyre damp. Let it sit for a couple of minutes and then blot the area with a paper towel to remove as much liquid as you can.
Wait for it to dry. You can place a fan near it if you want it to dry faster. Once the spot is fully dry, sprinkle baking soda over it. Let it sit for about 15 minutes and then vacuum it up.
If it still smells after all that, try repeating this step.

The Vagaries Of Vinegar
Vinegar is as common as hen’s teeth, as the saying goes, useful in cooking and cleaning and with a pedigree dating back to the dawn of recorded history. The cleaning part of this fermented acid liquid comes from its acumen as a remover of smells, including cat pee.
Here’s some advice on using vinegar as a pet odor remover: first, add about one part vinegar to two parts water in a spray bottle and test it on an inconspicuous area to make sure it won’t stain the area you actually want cleaned. Then spritz and after a few minutes use folded paper towels to blot up the remaining liquid.
On the other hand, the Humane Society says that using a strong chemical odor remover like vinegar and ammonia could encourage your pet to mark that same spot again, something to keep in mind if the animal is still a resident.
How To Get Rid Of Cat Urine Smell Under House
I recommend that you to purchase a small hand held black light. These little lights will highlight the urine and you can at least figure out where the problem lies. If the cat urine is truly under the house you might be able to get rid of the odor using a couple of different products. The best ones I’ve used have a bacteria in them that literally eats the urine. I’ve also used a product called Odorban that was more of a masking type agent, but worked remarkable well. If it’s in the insulation you will have to remove and replace it. If the urine is on the inside of the house I’ve had no luck with any product except oil based kilz paint which seals right over the stains and thus odors. All of these products are expensive, so I really urge you to spend $10 on the black light so you know what you are dealing with.

How Do You Diagnose Flatulence
Once you notice the difference in the natural flatulence of your cat, then seeking the assistance and consultation of your vet is the next best step.
Your vet will initially want your cats full health history before you can get started. Specific foods and eating patterns can help immediately reveal the cause of your cats excessive farting.
If possible, you should always keep a record of what your cat eats daily, how much they eat and at what time they eat. To determine whether the cause is food allergy related, your vet will advise you run a hypoallergenic food trial on your cat.If the cause of the problem seems to be a much serious medical complication, for example a particular disease, then your veterinarian will advise you to run further diagnostic tests.
For instance, if the believed culprits happen to be parasites, then a stool sample will be required from your cat. This method happens to be the most effective way of exposing any worms .
If its inflammatory bowel disease that your vet suspects your cats have then a gastric biopsy is what theyll order for your cat. This medical procedure can be done with an endoscope or through abdominal surgery.
The endoscope happens to be a way less invasive medical procedure, however, both procedures contain their own specific individual risks attached to them.
