What Is Chicken Meal In Cat Food

Is It True That The Chicken In Commercial Pet Foods Is Made From The Parts Of The Chicken That People Don’t Eat

what is chicken meal in dog food

In almost every pet food, this is true. If you happen to see “chicken breast” on the list of ingredients then the food does indeed contain chicken breast. But, a bag of dog food with a picture of a nice plump chicken breast on the front will most likely contain chicken that is not breast. It’s a little misleading, isn’t it? When we go to the grocery store and buy boneless, skinless chicken for our human family to eat, then the remainder of the chicken is what gets put into pet food. As described above, a lot of what we don’t eat is very healthy for dogs.

A good food company will do strict monitoring of the quality of chicken and by-product that comes into their pet food factories. Many companies will do regular testing for salmonella and other contaminants. These products may not have been used in the human market but that doesn’t mean that they are unsafe or unclean. They didn’t get scraped off of the floor in the human grade factory.

What To Consider When Purchasing Freeze

Raw Versus Limited-Ingredient: Before you transition your cat to a raw food diet, or go shopping for new food after you’ve made the decision to go raw, it’s important to understand the language you’ll be seeing on food packaging and labels. Sometimes, along with the raw food diets a store or website offers, you might find food labeled “grain-free,” or “limited-ingredient.” While good options, these are not raw foods. Raw foods are those made with real meat, bones, and organs that have not been processed with heat. If a formula is made from raw ingredients it will say so on the packaging, so keep an eye out for this when shopping for raw food for your cat.

Budget: We all want to give our pets the best of the best when it comes to medical care and upkeep, which includes food, but sometimes our budgets may limit us. It’s important to remember that that’s OK! If you’re thinking of moving to a raw food diet but simply cannot afford to keep feeding your feline exclusively raw food, you can always look to toppers or treats that can be added to your pet’s existing diet. This will still give them the benefits of that raw food without breaking the bank and may allow for a small change to be made over the long-term, which is preferred over an unsustainable lifestyle choice that doesn’t last.

From A Nutrient Standpoint They Can Be Nearly Identical And Quality May Have More To Do With Process And Raw Materials

The availability of fresh poultry and rendered poultry products coincided with the commercialization and industrialization of poultry production in the 1940s and 1950s and feed values for poultry by-product meal were first established in the 1950s . The volume of rendered poultry proteins in 2003 was estimated at 3,073.5 million pounds per year and the companion animal industry consumes about 23% .

differs from poultry meal only by the inclusion of “heads, feet and entrails” . From a nutrient composition they can be virtually identical. A proposal in 1998 to drop the “by-product” designation from poultry products and replace it with the term “protein” was rejected by AAFCO. Is there a nutritional rationale for the different names?

In a study comparing protein quality of various rendered chicken parts, Aldrich and Daristotle reported that the PER value of feet and bone/cartilage were 0.87 and 1.22, respectively whereas, heads, viscera and gizzards/livers/hearts were 2.50, 3.04 and 3.08, respectively. The protein quality of these latter parts was comparable to backs/breastplate and whole birds without feathers .

While chicken meal is higher in protein, weve seen through studies that the digestibility of a food is actually more important. The amount of digestible protein is what counts for proper nutrition, good coat and good stool quality rather than the amount of crude protein or the actual protein content in the food.

Fresh, cooked chicken also has a higher digestibility for all 10 of the essential amino acids pets need to thrive. The chart below shows the studys findings across three of the most crucial amino acids.

It could be made at home with boiled chicken and cooked plain rice, or it could be produced with recognizable ingredients in a facility, packaged without preservatives, and then frozen. For the brands we list here, we researched those that offer food thats commercially produced and thoroughly cooked at a low temperature, and that contain some combination of meats, grains, fruits, and vegetablesit tends to look like you took a humans Thanksgiving dinner plate and mixed it all together.

Possible Drawbacks Of Chicken Meal In Cat Food

The main drawback of the chicken meal is that it can be sourced from animals that have died from various causes.

Some people believe that the high-temperature cooking process used to create chicken meals destroys many of the beneficial nutrients present in the raw product. However, research has shown this not to be the case.

The high heat used in the rendering process does not damage the amino acids, fatty acids, or other nutrients that are essential for your cats health.

Chicken meal is also criticized because it can be sourced from 4D animals .

Some animal rights activists say that even though the rendering process is high-temperature, it is still not wholly sterilized.

However, there are food-grade enzymes and other ingredients added during this process to prevent bacterial contamination.

Rendering is also almost always done in a facility where waste disposal has been safely conducted or is tightly regulated for health and safety to ensure that meat products are not contaminated.

  • Why Are Internal Organs And Bone Included In Chicken By

Internal organs are a rich source of protein, fats, and minerals, such as iron, that are essential to cat health and they add a taste that cats enjoy. Including some ground bone provides a good source of minerals, such as calcium. Some pet food manufacturers formulate their products without such ingredients to appeal to cat owners, rather than for the health of the cats themselves. However, the nutritional needs of cats are not the same as those of humans.

    How Is Chicken Meal Made

Chicken meal is typically made using various parts of the chicken, such as necks, bones, skin, intestine, feet, and meat.

In other situations, the chicken meal component is derived from 4D meat , which raises a slew of new issues, including the potential presence of foreign objects or hazardous amounts of pharmaceuticals.

The carcass is cooked at a high temperature to dissolve the fat and water, extracting protein and minerals from the bone. Then, moisture is removed, and what remains is concentrated into a very high protein powder that provides essential amino acids for cats.

The finished product is then screened for contaminants, and the best quality meal is packed and sold to pet food manufacturers. During this high-temperature process, bacteria, viruses, parasites, and organisms die.

Many are agree that valuable nutrients also die that is the reason it is called dead meat sometimes. But on the other side, it helps the manufacturer to save money.
