Which Types Of White Cats Are There

Cat Adoption & Rescue: Tips for Adopting a Cat from a Shelter

Even white cat breeds have a variety of white types to choose from. Some cats are white due to being born with little or no melanin pigmentation.

Melanin is the gene mechanism that produces color and without it, a cats coat will be white and the skin and eyes will be colorless. There are three gene mutations that are known to produce a white kitten:

2 3
Albino gene or Albino White cat breeds are born with no melanin pigmentation. This is an extremely rare cat and most white cats are not classified as albino. A true Albino White has pale red/pink eyes and skin coloring. Albinism is not connected to deafness. Piebald gene, also known as Complete White Spotting occurs when a cat carries a dominant spotting gene which covers the coat in all white. If the spotting factor is incomplete, the white kitten will grow to be a spotted black and white cat. White spotting is not linked to being deaf. Epistatic gene, commonly referred to as Dominant White, is the gene that produces white cats with blue, orange or odd color eyes and this mutation is most closely related to deafness. These cats will have hearing loss on the same side that she has a blue eye.

Go To The Nearest Rescue Organization

A better option than a shelter is going to a local rescue organization. These rescue groups are dedicated to saving various animals, including cats, from high-kill situations and crowded shelters.

They also require a small adoption fee, but this can easily be waived if you choose to be a foster parent for their rescue.

After the fostering period, they can give you the necessary paperwork for the official adoption of the cat. This also serves as an assessment if you are ready to be a cat parent or not.

Why Our Kitten Lounge Is Important To Los Angeles

Kitten SeasonFrom spring to fall tens of thousands of kittens pounce into LA during kitten season – and most of them are euthanized due to lack of shelter space and resources. While rescue groups in LA fight to save as many as they can , there is still a bottle neck in the system that hinders saving these kittens.
Heres the problemDuring kitten season, the 8 week and under category are the largest population being euthanized in LA shelters. A few rescue groups with either foster networks or kitten nursery resources pull a portion of these Bottle Babies and nurse them to adoptable age. HERE IS THE ISSUE, fosters and rescue adoption events do not have the exposure to move the high volume of adoptable age kittens. This creates a bottle neck of adoptable age kittens clogging up valuable kitten fosters.

Why Cant I Bring The Kittens And Their Mother Indoors

Even if your home is very nice, a mother cat may become so stressed by being confined in the new environment that it impacts her health and her ability to care for her kittens. Community cats thrive in their outdoor home and the mother cat has likely chosen an ideal space to raise her kittens, so there is no need to intervene.

Other Pets In The Household

Lots of adopters come to us for a kitten because they have a dog, and want to raise the kitten to be best friends with it. The truth is, some kittens are destined to be cats who dont like dogs or possibly not even like other cats. Just like people, cats are born with certain personality traits that are unavoidable regardless of a kittens environment during formative months. However, many of our adult cats have lived successfully with dogs in their previous or foster homes. If you currently have a dog in your household, we can pair you up with a cat who will fit right in.

Pros Of Getting A Free Kitten

Lets start with the advantages. Here are some benefits of getting a free kitten:

1. You can save a lot of money

Since you dont have to spend a single cent, you can save thousands of dollars usually spent buying a newborn kitten from a breeder.

You also dont need to pay for adoption fees required by shelters or rescues. Its the most practical option.

2. You can allot more budget on cat supplies

With the money you saved, you can focus on purchasing high-quality items for your cats convenience. These include carriers, beddings, toys, cat trees, scratching posts, and grooming essentials.

You can also invest in a good pet insurance policy to ensure your cats health for the years to come.

3. You dont have to wait for long approval periods

Adopting a cat from a rescue usually takes two weeks or more since they are run by volunteers. When you get a free kitten from a friend or other sources, you dont have to deal with these lengthy processing times.

You can instantly get your kitten and take it home. You can also save yourself from interviews, home visits, and tedious evaluations.

4. You can have an instant companion

When adopting a free kitty, you dont need to be approved by rescue volunteers or be waitlisted by a breeder.

Once you settle the meetup schedule with the cat owner, you can take your pet home instantly.

Typically, this is also a paperwork-free transaction so you wont have to worry about time-consuming contract signing, settling of payment, etc.

Ask Your Local Shelter

30 rescued kittens ready for adoption today!

Animals are taken in by the dozen every minute in pet shelters. Sadly, approximately 5,000 cats and dogs are euthanized each day.

While most animal shelters require an adoption fee, others can let you adopt a kitten without charge.

However, you should proceed with caution because you may end up getting a kitten that has underlying illnesses due to old age or complications from poor health. You will need to shoulder any medical expenses needed to treat them.

If your local animal shelter has a Wait Until 8® program or something similar, it can help. The shelter provides tools and instructions, like kitten care kits, to ensure a kittens caregiver has everything they need.

Call or visit and ask your local shelter if they have this program in place. If not, we encourage you to ask your shelter leaders to adopt the program.Learn more at alleycat.org/WaitUntil8.

Ask A Friend Who Is Expecting A New Litter

If you have a friend, relative, or even a neighbor who is expecting a new kitten litter, you can pay them a visit to ask if you can have one of the newborns.

If its an unexpected pregnancy, theres a high chance that they might agree to give you one for free.

Reassure your friend that the kitten will be given proper care and attention. Then, when the kitten is old enough for you to take home, you can offer them a free drink or better yet, cook them a good meal as a way of saying thanks.

Most shelters do not have programs to provide the careunweanedkittensneedto surviveand thrive. As a result, there is a risk that the kittenswill be killed.Shelters in general are not good environments for mother cats and kittens. Cancer In White Cat Breeds

To keep your white kitty as healthy as you can, start by limiting time in the sun. White cats have very sensitive skin due to no production of melanin so its important to keep her indoors and away from sun exposure for two reasons:

  • Sunburn just like fair-skinned people burn quicker in the sun, so will a fair-color-coated pet. Its important to apply a good quality, cat-safe sunscreen. Cats are perpetual groomers so application would need to be frequent and it would need to be a product safe for cats to ingest. Speak to your veterinarian for recommended products.
  • Cancer snow-coated cats fair ears, nose and eyelid skin are highly susceptible to squamous cell carcinoma or skin cancer. Signs of the disease initially appear as red, dry and ulcerated spots on the affected areas. If left untreated, this could be fatal for your feline. If you notice any of these symptoms, see your veterinarian and have your cats skin checked out.

How To Get Kittens For Free In Your Area

Regardless of where you live, there are many ways for you to get a free kitten or cat. Although not always guaranteed, your chances of successfully taking home a new companion are never zero.

The ways listed below are realistic enough to actually let you have the pet of your dreams without having to spend a single dime:

Cons Of Getting A Free Kitten

Kittens For Adoption Near Me Petfinder

As they say, there are two sides to every coin. So before you get a free kitten, consider the following disadvantages:

    1. You can get a cat with several diseases

There is very little to no guarantee that the free kitten you will get is healthy. Its likely that the owners havent taken them to the vet or that their parents might have suffered from a grave illness.

Stray cats, especially, may have acquired infections, injuries, and life-threatening diseases.

    2. You might end up spending more money on medical needs

If you adopt a free kitten, you dont have the advantage of getting a cat with complete vaccinations and preventive medications. You will also need to pay for neutering or spaying services out of your own pocket.

If they have any form of sickness as Ive mentioned, you need to spend money on treatment. As these expenses add up, you may find that the money you spent is almost equal to the price of a kitten from a breeder.

    3. You might need to deal with a feral cat

Aside from medical concerns, you also need to observe the cats behavior. For instance, if you adopt a feral cat, you may have trouble dealing with aggressiveness.

Because they are not used to humans, they have a tendency to hiss, claw, or even bite when approached. You need to be very patient in taming them.

    4. You can get scammed by people on the internet

Since anyone can post anything online, you cant be sure that the free kitten ad you see on Facebook or Instagram isnt a scam.
