The History Of The Havana Brown
A number of cat breeds have been created by crossing the Siamese with other breeds to bring in desired traits, such as new colors, patterns, or hair lengths. The Havana Brown is one such man-made breed.
Solid, or self-brown, cats were known in England and Europe in the late 19th century and went by the name Swiss Mountain Cats. The breeding of these cats was discouraged in the 1920s, but a group of British breeders in the 1950s crossed chocolate- and seal-point Siamese with black domestic shorthairs and Russian Blues to create striking chocolate brown cats with emerald eyes. They became known as Havana Browns, probably for their tobacco-like coloring rather than any association with Cuba. They have also been called Chestnut Foreign Shorthairs.
The first Havana Brown was imported into North America in the mid-1950s. The breed was accepted for registration by Cat Fanciers Association in 1959 and was granted Championship status in 1964. To ensure a wider gene pool, the cats can be outcrossed to unregistered black or blue domestic shorthairs, certain colors of Oriental Shorthairs, and chocolate-point or seal-point Siamese.

How Do Chocolate Ragdolls Change Color When Their Body Temperature Is Low
As their body temperature becomes lower, pigment production is increased in chocolate Ragdolls and their milk-chocolate areas become darker in tone.
You may notice a shift from chocolate toward brown, and if this is the case, then consider taking their temperature.
While fevers are a sign of acute diseases, low body temperature is also a sign of disease, which can also be acute, but also chronic. So if you notice that your cat has low body temperature, then take it to the veterinarian.

Are Overweight Chocolate Ragdolls Darker In Color Than Slim Ones
This might seem unlikely, but body weight does affect how a chocolate Ragdoll is colored and it has everything to do with fatty tissue deposits. In overweight cats, this type of tissue is present in large quantities below the skin, which maintains a lower temperature in the skin area, where pigment production happens.
This happens because fatty tissue has low thermal conductivity and blocks the heat away from the skin. The most affected areas are the abdomen and chest areas and the fur in this area will appear darker in tone in chocolate Ragdolls that are overweight.
However, this is not permanent. If the cat loses weight and the fatty tissue deposits disappear, the heat barrier disappears with is, and pigment production is decreased. Then, the fur will become lighter in color.

What Is The Difference Between Chocolate Ragdolls And Seal Point Ragdolls
Both chocolate and seal point Ragdolls have ivory white bodies and brown points. The main difference between them is the shade of brown.
Seal point Ragdolls have intense dark brown points, while chocolate Ragdolls have their points in a much lighter and warmer shade of brown, which can vary all the way to milk-chocolate.

We are a small, quality breeder of the rare and unique Havana Brown cat. A breed that captured our hearts almost 15 years ago and never have we regretted our choice to commit to working with this fabulous breed.
You are likely already aware that this is a rare breed of cat and breeders around the world are few. Because we must work hard on diversity and ensure health in our lines, we breed only a couple of litters a year. This is the case with most all breeders of this unique breed. Sometimes breeding can be a logistical challenge when you do not have a large cattery so this requires to work well together, to know pedigrees, DNA test cats and stay current on what breeding cats are available around the worlds.
Being a hobby breeder is a labor of love. The expense, time and devotion to the animals in our care, heartbreak when we must face loss and extensive amount of time we spend networking with other breeders, Vets, researchers, breed clubs, Exhibitions. learning history and pedigrees, as well as the wonderful families who share their homes with our fur kids, make this feel like so much more than a hobby. It is a love for a breed which has amazing and unique characteristics that are not often known or understood.

The Chocolate Ragdoll is a lighter brown in color than the Ragdoll sealpoint. “Chocolate” is the color of the cat’s points – but their patterns can vary just like other colors in the Ragdoll cat breed.

The Average York Chocolate
In terms of its agreeability with domestic living, the York Chocolate is well suited to an active family environment with children and other house pets. Despite this, the York is not your typical lap cat, but manages well enough when left to its own devices. All cats have the potential to develop genetic health problems, just as all people have the potential to inherit diseases. Any breeder who claims that her breed has no health or genetic problems is either untruthful or unknowledgeable about the breed. Run, dont walk, from any breeder who does not offer a health guarantee on kittens, who tells you that the breed is 100 percent healthy and has no known problems, or who tells you that her kittens are isolated from the main part of the household for health reasons.
