Why Does My Dog Follow Me Into The Bathroom

Why Does My Cat Follow Me to The Bathroom?

Your dog is the furry companion you can always count on to be by your side, even when you dont need it like when youre using the bathroom! While its true we often attend their potty breaks, do they really have to attend ours? If youve been wondering, Why does my dog follow me? weve got answers.

If your dog follows you into the bathroom, its likely a result of their animal instinct and pack mentality. Canines who do this are referred to as Velcro dogs, due to their desire to be attached to your side. They may follow you around, even to the bathroom, to protect a part of their pack. Without you in sight while youre home, they may feel a sense of vulnerability.

It could also be related to positive reinforcement. If every time you are with your dog, he gets affection or treats, hes likely to more often, says Dr. Rachel Barrack, a licensed veterinarian certified in both veterinary acupuncture and Chinese herbology with Animal Acupuncture in New York City.

Whether because theyre nervous or curious, your bathroom is a part of you dogs home, and as such, monitoring your whereabouts within these boundaries comes second nature to them. Privacy isnt an issue for your dog, but they are always concerned about your safety.

Is It Normal For My Cat To Follow Me Everywhere

The short answer is.. yes! Its very normal for cats to follow owners from room to room. Cats are often thought of as solitary creatures but they absolutely love to follow us around! While every cat has their own distinct personality, cats generally enjoy being around their family. This means that they may choose to spend time in whatever room youre currently in. More clingy breeds, like the Siamese or the Sphynx, will follow you everywhere, any time.

So Why Exactly Does My Cat Follow Me To The Bathroom

When we are in the restroom, we prefer to hang out there alone. Its not exactly a social time for us excluding the mobile device that sometimes finds its way into the bathroom with us. Your cat, however, does not care what you are doing in there. And if you attempt to shut the door, this triggers their curiosity even more than usual. What is this strange contraption separating me from you? Are there other cats in there? What are you hiding from me? The list is endless, really. And thus triggers their odd cat behaviors into overdrive.

Why Is A Stray Cat Following Me

A stray cat may follow you if it can smell your cat or cats. If you have cats then you might be interested in helping it out. They may want food or water or some affection. Being a street cat isnt an easy life so they may be looking to you for help and comfort.

If a stray cat is being friendly towards you it is most likely that it is a socialized cat rather than a feral so dont be too concerned that you may be attacked. Most feral cats leave humans alone.

If the stray cat continues to follow you but seems like its not a stray cat it may well be lost. Do check its tags and local social media.

How To Stop My Cat From Following Me To The Bathroom

Now that you know why your cat accompanies you to the bathroom, you may also be looking to avoid it, at least in certain situations. To get him to stay in the living room or another area of the house instead of following you to the toilet, we give you the following tips so that your cat does not get into the bathroom with you:

  • Teach your cat that this is not a suitable place for him. They are animals with great intelligence, so it should not be very difficult for you to achieve it.
  • Find encouragement to correct this behavior. Prohibition is not ideal for a cat to stop doing an action; patience is essential to achieve it. Avoid punishing or scolding her.
  • Bet on positive reinforcement and every time you go to the bathroom and your cat does not follow you to the bathroom, make him see that he has behaved correctly by congratulating him, giving him caresses and even a treat as soon as you leave the toilet and see him.
  • Enhance the areas of the home enabled for the cat. Try not to miss anything, placing a variety of toys, food and freshwater. Also, make sure that these areas are not exposed to the sun, not to suffer too much heat.
  • Pay attention to him and spend as much time as possible with him. Thus, he will not need to accompany you around the house to show his affection towards you and receive it.

One of the most frustrating problems Ive had to deal with as a pet parent is staying on top of my cats desire to play. While this is typically hard to do, toys like these that allow cats to play by themselves make the job one heck of a lot easier.

The hits in my household are ridiculously affordable: cat springs, ball track toys, &kick sticks. I have a slew scattered around the house, so when my cats get bored, even if Im busy or not even home, my furries are able to actively play.

Why Does My Cat Follow Me Around Meowing

The reason why your cattails you around the house and vocalises can vary. If this is your cats normal pattern of behaviour, its likely that she is simply bored or anxious and is fussing for attention. Although cats are generally very independent, it may be that your particular cat is one who sometimes needs help to feel calm and secure. You can help here by engaging her in strenuous play a couple of times a day. This gives her the social interaction she craves as well as burning off some of her nervous energy and anxiety. Provide her with plenty of attractive toys and a stimulating environment with lots of cat-approved activities: scratching, climbing and hiding. Keep your eyes peeled for other signs of fear or insecurity, such as spraying or destructive scratching. This kind of behaviour indicates that your cat is struggling with territorial anxiety and you need to address that so she feels safer.

If this is unusual behaviour for your cat, there may be a specific problem that requires your attention. Cats often act this way when theyre under the weather. Take a moment to check your furry friend for any signs of ill-health, such as a fever, mucus around the eyes or nose, excessive drooling or redness of the eyes and mucous membranes. Check for parasites such as fleas, ticks, ear mites or worms.

Why Does My Cat Follow Me And No One Else

The reason is simple: your cat considers you as its mother. Cats tend to run favorites in the family, which is the reason why they follow you and not other people.

One thing you should know about cats is that they dont trust easily. Sometimes, trusting more than one human can be overwhelming for kitties. They are wary of strangers so it takes time to earn their affection.

But how do cats choose their favorite person? Cats can recognize people who do them good. If you are the one who feeds, plays, and groom the kitty, you are likely to be the favorite person at home. Letting your cat sleep in your bed also makes the bond between the two of you stronger.

Your Cat Could Be Curious About What Youre Going To Do In The Washroom

Your cat doesnt necessarily need to be bored to be curious enough about your behaviour to follow you straight into the bathroom.

We all know how curious cats can be. Its not a stretch to assume that maybe the only reason any cat follows a human into the bathroom ever is because he or shes curious about what that humans going to do.

Pretty awkward, but it could be the whole truth.

And dont tell me, But my cat already knows what Im going to do My cat knows I have coffee every single morning in the same, highly recognizable bright red Le Creuset Mug;that I literally use for nothing else.

Doesnt stop him from taking a sniff and;recoiling in disgust every;single morning when I offer him the cup in case his curious self would like to catch a whiff.

Cats are weirdos about this curiosity stuff, and will literally check on the very same thing over and over again to make sure its still that very same thing each and every time they are given the opportunity.

Lets not pretend knowing whats going to happen next really factors into their curiosity. They still gonna check.

The Cat Has Separation Anxiety

Cats can develop separation anxietyif you leave them alone too often. If you sheltered your cat too much, separation anxiety will kick in if it experiences drastic changes in routine or environment. Being in a new home or around new people may cause the cat to seek your presence. This will lead to endless following and meowing to be near you.

Aside from that, genetics has something to do with a cats risk of developing separation anxiety. Breeds like Burmese and Siamese cats can be overly attached to their owners and develop separation anxiety along the way.

How To Train Your Cat To Wait Outside The Bathroom Door

Why does my cat follow me into the bathroom?

Follow these steps if youd like to teach your cat to wait outside the bathroom door. Through training and reinforcing calm behaviour, your cat will learn that good things come to those who wait.

Provide stimulation and distraction

Start by providing stimulation in the form of food puzzles or a play circuit for your cat in a space away from the bathroom door. When your cat is entertained, take a step towards the bathroom door, and reward your cat for continuous interaction with the toy.

Reward your cat for not following you

Once your cat gets the game, take a further step towards the door, rewarding your cat immediately when they continue interacting with the toy provided. Build this up over multiple sessions, with the door open at first. If your cat attempts to follow you, simply lure them back and encourage engagement with the toy available.

Once youre able to reach the door without your cat joining you, walk into the bathroom and then return immediately to your cat. Engage in games and reward them for having remained calm and not followed you.

Practice closing the door

Once you see your cat is able to remain calmly outside, push the door gently to. Build the time up over various sessions, gradually increasing the time the door is closed.
