How Long Can You Leave Wet Cat Food Out How Long Can It Sit Out

February 19, 2018 By Johnny Salib

We recently switched our cat Beau and my moms cat Walker onto a full wet food diet because they kept developing Urinary Tract Infections. Most recently Beau had a Double Cystomy and PU Surgery to help clear his bladder from all of the crystals that had developed.

Due to the fact we had no problems with kibble before with cats before them, we never really tried supplemented either of their diets with wet food. This was especially true with our cat Beau who didnt particularly like wet food. Surprisingly, every can of food we tried to feed him would be left untouched. Bau would take a few sniffs of wet food and then continue begging for food, although there was perfectly good food in front of him.;

When switching over to feeding my cats wet food, Ill admit I didnt think too much about it. My vets were telling me that it was the only choice we had with Beau and that Walker would be better off being on an all wet food diet.

The main thing that I knew about being on an all wet food diet is that cats are less likely to become dehydrated, develop urinary tract infections and potentially can alleviate some other health problems. Though an all wet food diet can help with some health problems it does commonly lead to diabetes and because of all of the;sugar in wet food there is a chance that cats will develop tartar and plaque more quickly.

Though, the burning question I personally had was: How long can I leave wet food out for?

Special Concerns For Adolescents And Adults

How Long Can Wet Cat Food Sit Out? [1 Hour Max]

Adolescent and adult cats deal better with warmer temperatures but those with all-white coats or coats with white patches may face another sun-related issue.

My sweet Cornish Rex, Jordan, had a red tabby-and-white coat, distinguished by a mostly white face and white ears. He loved to stretch out in the sunniest spots in my home.

On a routine visit at the vets office, the doctor noticed that Jordans large, white ears seemed a little pinker than normal. He explained that cats with white fur can become sunburned and that prolonged sunburns can lead to a type of skin cancer in cats. My vet advised me to apply a gentle sunscreen to Jordans ears and nose.

Dont worry: If youve put a cat-safe sunscreen on your white cats ears and nose, he can enjoy his sunny naps.

Be concerned: Overly pink skin or small sores along the edges of the ears are signs of sunburn. Take him to the vet as soon as you can for treatment advice.

How Long Can Wet Cat Food Sit Out Before It Goes Bad

Wet cat food will generally spoil around 1-4 hours after it has been open and has been exposed to air.

Although, it does depend on the food, and the ambient temperature of your home.

Generally, the warmer it is, and the larger the surface area, the faster the food will spoil.

So for instance, wet cat food that is spread thinly in a bowl is going to go off faster than it would be if it was in central pile .

In fact, in Understanding Food: Principles and Preparation, it states that food that has been left between the temperatures of 40° F and 140° F for 4 hours must be disposed of. This is advice from the USDA.

So, even if your cat was to prefer eating their food in multiple sittings, leaving it out for an extended period of time just should not be done.

It also comes advised not to leave it too late. Why risk it?

So, after 1-2 hours, you should be looking to take away and remove any wet food that has been put down.

And be sure to wash the bowl thoroughly with a good brand of soap before putting any more food in.

As you can imagine, this is just not practical during the night. Who wants to get up every 2 hours to do this? Even once would be a nightmare.

So, it may be a better idea to consider dry food for your cats consumption at this time.

Its dryness pretty much makes it impossible for bacteria to grow.

Thus, it is generally safer for much longer.

This is actually why it was originally invented; to last for longer periods of time without going bad.

Why Do Cats Act Like They Are Starving

So, now you know that if your cat is acting like she is starving, it is worth checking it out. But, what if its just hungry all the time?

Monitor Nursing And Lactation

Colostrum is the first milk that the mother cat produces for her kittens. It is imperative that the kittens receive an adequate amount of colostrum because it contains vital nutrients and immunoglobulins that are necessary for proper immune system maturation.

Newborn kittens should be nursing every one to two hours, so your cat will likely be with them constantly;for the first week or two.;If you think that your cat may not be producing milk, or isnt letting the kittens nurse, contact your veterinarian right away.;

Use caution when approaching the kittens, as some mothers may show aggression to humans;or other household pets if;they;perceive a threat.;

Avoid giving medications and vaccines while your cat is nursing.

If your cat becomes ill, call your veterinarian immediately and make sure to let them know that she is nursing so that they can prescribe safe medications if needed. Contact your vet if you your cat does any of the following:

  • Stops eating

  • Becomes very lethargic

  • Has redness and swelling in any of her mammary glands

Feeding Cats Without Cat Food Bowls Taps Into Their Instincts

This concern has led her to create the NoBowl Feeding System, oval-shaped plastic molds designed to mimic the body of prey. It allows you to pour measured kibble into two openings. These molds are fitted in outer cloth wraps to stimulate the tactile feel of prey for a cat to grab, claw and use his teeth on.

This is not my science. This is my solution, said Dr. Bales, who relied on a highly successful Kickstarter campaign to create and launch her product late last year.

Start by placing these kibble-filled faux mice on a floor in a closed room. Once your cat discovers how to swat or bite to get the kibble, gradually increase the challenge by hiding these easy-to-clean NoBowls for him to find. Dr. Bales cat, Carlos, can now find the faux mouse inside a hidden shoebox with a lid.;

How Does Cat Food Go Bad

Once wet cat food starts developing bacteria, it begins to spoil. The more bacteria that forms, the more likely your cat is to get sick from eating it. While you may not be able to see these microscopic organisms, they are dangerous nonetheless.

Leaving cat food outside of the refrigerator speeds up this process considerably. This is why it is not a good idea to let it sit in your cats bowl for a very long time.

While dry cat food can already contain bacteria, it is extremely rare. Spoilage is not a major issue with this type of food.

You also need to keep in mind that cats cannot always tell if their food has gone bad. While these animals do have a powerful sense of smell, they can become sick from ingesting even small traces of certain bacteria. There is always a chance that the bacteria has not yet affected the aroma of the food.

Use Can Covers Or Ziploc Bags For The Fridge

When you store wet cat food in the fridge, you have to cover it to keep it fresh. If you dont cover it, then it will dry out and you will have to throw out a large portion of it on the second serving. Moreover, it is important that the wet cat food gets as little air as possible, even in the fridge.;;

While refrigeration slows down the alteration process significantly, having access to air still permits the development of some bacteria and fungi. So when you store the cans in the fridge, use a can cover to keep the food safe and to prevent it from drying out.Pet food can covers are inexpensive and extremely useful. As an alternative to pet food covers, you can use Ziploc bags. Simply place the can inside the Ziploc bag, get the air out, and zip it up to keep the food safe.

If you have leftover cat food in a pouch, then you can use a food seal clip and then place it in a fridge. If you dont have any, then Ziploc bags are also very useful for pouches. Another alternative is to take out the leftover cat food and move it into a plastic container with a lid.

To sum up, wet cat food can be left out for up to 2 hours, but do this only if you have no other alternative. Your best choice is to get your cat smaller portions so that you dont have any leftover cat food. If you do have leftovers, though, you should refrigerate it after opening the can/pouch. Use a pet food can cover for the cans you refrigerate to store it safely, then remember to heat up the food before you serve it.

How To Store Kibble So It Lasts Longer

The best way to ensure kibble lasts longer and retains more of its flavor and nutritional content is to store it in an airtight container.

A lot of dry cat food comes in cardboard boxes with a little flap that opens at the top. This is obviously not airtight.

But the reason food comes like this is because its a less expensive way to package it, and the manufacturers are assuming itll be eaten within a reasonable time after being opened.

Most cat owners, which includes me, transfer the dry food into an airtight container anyway. I just buy another box when I need to top up my food container.

She Rubs Her Face On You

Its true that, for most animals, a headbutt is anything but a sign of affection. But for cats, its actually a loving gesture! You may have seen cats bump someone with their headssometimes gently, sometimes not so gently!and then continue to rub their faces on the person, usually on their legs or feet. This is how cats mark things with their unique scent. When a cat rubs their face on or headbutts their humans leg or face, they are actually marking with the scent glands located along the side of their face and top of their head, says Jodi Ziskin, a healthy pet coach and;Director of Communications for Treatibles. Intermingling scents is a sign of love, acceptance, and ownershipcats only own people they trust. Though headbutting surprisingly isnt one, watch out for these other signs your kitty is mad at you.
