Silica Litters For Cats With Asthma
The first type of cat litter that may be better for cats who suffer from asthma is silica crystal litter. Compared to natural litters like paper and wood, and dustless clumping clay, they work the best .
Ive tried several different types of these like Pretty Litter, Fresh Step Crystals, and even a Chewy branded unscented version. .
Fresh Step Crystals
Fresh Step Crystals silica litter isnt advertised as a hypoallergenic, asthma-safe cat litter, but its one of the least dusty and least offensive smelling litters Ive used with my cat.
It has much larger crystals than most other silica litters, which majorly helps to keep the dust to an absolute minimum.
I also can barely notice any type of scent, even though its supposed to be fresh scented. Whatever it is, its not overwhelming like other scented litter, which in and of itself can also trigger asthma.
Aside from being virtually dust-free, it works fantastic. It does a great job absorbing urine and all you have to do is scoop out the poop and stir the litter around regularly.
I never noticed a urine smell the entire time, nor did I notice any urine accumulating at the bottom of the litter box.
The worst part about this litter is that the granules are so large when you step on them, they can really hurt your feet.
Luckily I didnt notice much tracking outside of the litter box area itself. Use a quality litter mat to keep this to a minimum and/or make sure to sweep and vacuum regularly around the litter box area.

What To Consider When Shopping For Cat Litter
Clumping vs. non-clumping litters: Cat litter is sold in both clumping and non-clumping formulas. Clumping formulas, including those made from clay, corn, wood, and grass, form solid masses when they encounter urine, and those must be removed from the litter daily.
Non-clumping litters absorb urine, too, but instead of forming clumps, the granules of silica, wood, or paper become saturated and gradually break down over time. On each cleaning, the substrate must be stirred to distribute the ammonia in the box. There is no difference between how non-clumping and clumping litters interact with solids â feces must still be scooped daily.
Both clumping and non-clumping litters manage bad smells. In the case of clumping formulas, urine is removed through daily scooping. In non-clumping formulas, urine accumulates in the box over time. Clumping litters can be topped off with additional litter as needed, but boxes filled with a non-clumping litter must be completely emptied and refilled after a period of two to seven weeks, depending on the brand and type of litter.
Litter texture: Litter preferences vary from cat to cat, according to Dr. Karen Sueda, veterinary behaviorist at VCA West Los Angeles Animal Hospital, but every feline wants a toileting substrate they can easily dig and cover their waste in. Cats with sensitive feet may avoid using litters with sharper granules, such as crystal or pellet formulas.

Is Clumping Litter Safe For Kittens
There are horror stories about cats eating clumping litter and having it form clumps inside their stomachs, but this isnt something most people need to worry about, said Medley. If your cat is eating litter, take them to the vet: It could be a sign of anemia or pica, the desire to eat things that are not food. Plus, in small quantities, sodium bentonite isnt dangerous for animalsits even an ingredient in some animal feed.
Some people are especially worried about kittens eating clumping litter, because kittens have smaller stomachs and may be more curious. Though some brands recommend using non-clumping litters until your kitten is 4 months old or so, others, like Cats Pride, note that theres no evidence that sodium bentonite has actually caused harm to a kitten this is a conclusion supported by vets Medley and Lund, as well as by everything we found when scanning the literature and reading many Internet forums. In my 7 years experience as a vet Ive not seen a foreign body from a kitten who has ingested clay clumping litter, said Lund. If youre concerned and would still like to use clumping clay litterI would!monitor your kittens behavior and check in with your vet if something seems amiss.
Overview Of Cat Litters For Asthma
If you have shopped around for cat litter for very long, you have likely seen that there are many different products out there. They can vary in the type of material, granule size, clumping ability, odor control, etc.
But when you focus on cat litters intended for those with asthma or allergies, the number of variables is reduced quite a bit.
Most good cat litters for asthma that you find will be comprised of a non-clay based material. While clay cat litter is fantastic for clumping and odor control, it does emit a lot of dust. Not only that, but many clay cat litters have very strong perfumes that can be a catalyst for allergies or even potentially asthma issues. That being said, there are some exceptions to this rule .
Crystal cat litters are another type of cat litter that typically will produce higher levels of dust than many people would prefer. But again, there are outliers to this statement.
Another commonality of the asthma-friendly cat litters that we have come across is that many of them are made of all-natural ingredients. This can include things such as paper, corn, wood, and more.
However, it is important to state that just because a cat litter isnt made of clay doesnt mean that it would automatically be good for someone with asthma or allergies. Quite a few of these all-natural cat litters can still emit pretty powerful perfume smells. Also, many of them can still produce significant levels of dust .

Naturally Fresh Pellet Unscented Non
If you want to go with a natural ingredient cat litter, but do not want to go with paper, walnut shells are also a popular option. While this may seem a little strange, walnut shell cat litter is actually incredibly absorbent and produces almost zero dust.
The walnut shell litter has no fragrance to it, no dyes, and no chemicals. This makes it hypoallergenic and good for those who have allergies or sensitivities. Because it is made of entirely natural ingredient, ground into pellet form, you can compost the litter, or let it biodegrade in the landfill. Either best way, it is much environmentally friendly than most other litter options.
There is no clumping, and the highly absorbent pellets are easy to sift when you clean the litter box. But, if you do not sift the litter, you may need to dump the entire litter each time, rather than just removing the messed pellets.
Pellet form can be harder to clean with scoop

While I have not used Purinas paper cat litter, there is no shortage of feedback from committed cat parents.
The few negative reviews for Yesterdays News cat litter tend to center around poor odor control. Yet many positive reviewers are happy with how the odor is absorbed and doesnt linger. This conflicting experience is the same for Green Kat cat litter users.
A word from personal experience: odor control is very subjective. The smell of your cats urine and poop greatly depends on your cats diet, and how often you clean the litter box.
Youd be surprised how a slightly pricier, but healthier, cat kibble can greatly reduce urine odor. Cleaning out your cats litter box once a day is good practice, too!

Four Reasons Why Cat Litter Matters
Even people who adore cats have to admit theyre sometimes not the easiest pets to take care of. They have a habit of reminding you its time to eat at 5:30 a.m., sometimes by dragging their claws across your eyelids. They leave you presents in the form of other dead animals, sometimes in your bed. And if they dont like their litter, they will definitely let you know, sometimes by peeing all over your home.
Okay, so cats are strange. But whats up with the litter? Isnt it all basically the same? Its sand that they go to the bathroom in, right?
Wrong. Cats are particular about litter the way humans are about the bathrooms we use. Sometimes the environment is so off-putting to a cat, theyd rather go anywhere else, like in your plants. More seriously, some litters pose health concerns for cats and humans alike, so its important to choose the right one. Lets take a look at why litter matters to your cat, and why it should matter to you.
Litter Matters Because of Texture
A big issue for cats is the texture of the litter. If a cat litter is too rough or the granules are too big, a cat will reject it because it doesnt feel good under their paws. Remember, they love to dig around in their litter before and after they go, and if the litter is too harsh, theyll reject it in favor of something else like your favorite blanket.

Tips To Manage The Litter Box Of An Asthmatic Cat
- Vacuum the house instead of sweeping its a good idea. If you have a carpeted house, you need to vacuum ideally every other day.
- Dont pour down the cat litter right into the cat litter box. Pour cat litter outside the house in a lidded container and then use a cup to pour litter in the box. This reduces the creation of dust. If you dont have a patio where to do this, make sure you pour down the litter slowly, leaving almost no distance between the bag and the litter box.
- Keep the litter box clean at all times. Chronic bronchitis or asthma can worsen with bad odors in the litter box. Since natural plain cat litter doesnt control odors as good as the ones with additives and fragrances, you need to clean the litter box as much as it takes to keep it odor free.
- Consider that most natural low-dust cat litters are lightweight, hence you will experience much more litter tracking around the surfaces. To make your life easier, get a handheld cordless vacuum that you can use right away.
