How To Get Cat Urine Out Of Wood

How to Eliminate Cat Urine Smell PERMANENTLY

Figuring out how to get cat pee out of wood can be a challenge. If the urine has soaked into the wood for a while, you must use a urine cleaner with a little more muscle. Hydrogen peroxide is safe and is a natural odor and stain remover. But before you get to work, check an inconspicuous area of the wood to make sure the hydrogen peroxide doesnt damage the finish.

Pour the hydrogen peroxide over the stain and then cover it with a cloth soaked in hydrogen peroxide. Cover the cloth with plastic wrap. Place something heavy atop it to hold it all down and let it sit overnight. The hydrogen peroxide will remove stains and eliminate the cat urine odor.

You can also give baking soda and white vinegar a try. These ingredients wont damage most wood, but spot-test an out-of-the way area first to make sure your finish is safe. The acid in the vinegar neutralizes the odor in fresh and dried urine stains, and the baking soda gives you some mild abrasives to work with.

Add detergent plus a quarter-cup white vinegar to your washers bleach dispenser. Alternatively, you can add a half-cup of baking soda directly into the washing machine with the fabrics.

Sprinkle baking soda on soft surfaces like carpets and cushions after cleaning them. Let the baking soda sit and dry, and then vacuum it up.

Types Of Products To Use

The best cleaning products for cleaning up cat urine are those that neutralize the odor. Never use an ammonia-based cleaner, which will make the odor worse. A word of caution: Never use bleach to clean up cat pee. Bleach combined with urine can cause a chemical reaction that emits dangerous gases.

Can You Use Vinegar On Leather To Reduce Cat Pee Odor

You can typically use a diluted vinegar on leather furniture, which is good news. Vinegar is a very common and very effective product for neutralizing bad odors and cleaning areas.

Note: Always be mindful to dilute the vinegar with water so that it is not too harsh on the leather surface, and also make sure to test the diluted vinegar on a small area before applying it to the area where there was urine.

Ideally, you should mix the vinegar in a solution of one part vinegar and one part water. You should use white vinegar for this process as it is the safest for the leather couch and also one of the most effective types of vinegar for neutralizing odors.

Once you have mixed the diluted vinegar together, you should take a clean washcloth and apply it to the area where the cat urinated.

Naturally, the smell of this area will change from urine to vinegar, which will be unpleasant at first but it will ensure that the cat will not be smelling the urine either. If the smell of vinegar is particularly strong or bothersome, you can wipe down the area with a damp washcloth after the vinegar has had some time to absorb into the leather.

This will reduce the smell of the vinegar, although if you have a strong sense of smell, theres a good chance you will be smelling vinegar for a few days, which is arguably better that the smell of urine.

Steer Clear Of These Products For Cat Urine Removal

A short list of common products to avoid when removing cat urine are: Chlorine Bleach: While effective at killing bacteria and neutralizing odors, bleach comes with its own list of adverse side-effects. Its pungent fumes make storage and use potentially unsafe, largely due to dioxin and mercury present in chlorine bleach.

Baking soda: Odors can be covered by baking soda, but this is usually a temporary solution. Additionally, baking soda cannot eliminate most bacteria, like E. coli and salmonella.

Household cleaners: Check the ingredient lists on many household cleaners, and youll see that ammonia is listed. Never use a cleaner that contains ammonia, as its scent will mimic urine, prompting cats to continue urinating.

Dishwashing Soap: Although it can remove most bacteria and urine stains, soap does not break down the chemical compounds of urine. Thus, even after applying soap to a surface, traces of uric acid are likely to remain.

Enzyme cleaners: Enzymes are typically found in soaps and detergents, and are best for breaking down stains, dirt, and grime. Unfortunately, this means that enzyme-based cleaners are better equipped to remove cat urine stains, rather than odors.

Throw soiled clothes into a bucket with a ½ cup of oxygen bleach for 2-3 hours. Next, remove clothes and soak in a bath of vinegar and water . Add some baking soda directly to the stain, letting the mix sit for 10-15 minutes. Then and only then can you add the cat pee clothes to the washing machine, set to cold, and run without any detergent. Hang clothes to dry, as the heat from the dryer may still cause the odor to set.

If this seems like a lot of work to get rid of a stain, youâre not wrong. We would reserve this sort of care and diligence for your most cherished articles of clothing, otherwise, it just might be time to go shopping.
