This trick is a winner. If your cat doesnt feel appealed by his wet food anymore simply put his favorite treats in the middle of the wet food and wait. You can put one, two, or three treats in its wet food, making sure to stick them inside the food, leaving the top exposed so your cat can smell them. My Cat Has Stopped Eating Wet Foods

My almost 2 year old, tortoise shell cat, named Korina, used to eat her wet food really well. She always has fresh water and dry food out for her. She has a set breakfast and dinner time, a pouch in the morning around about 8-9 AM, and at night around about 8-9 PM, and she would nibble dry cat food throughout the day and drink her water. Shes done this her whole life and I have always made sure she wouldnt get bored of her food by changing it every now and then, and she would love it and eat the whole thing.

Then, all of a sudden, she stopped. I did her one pouch for breakfast and she didnt even eat half of it. I had to throw it away, then at night she wouldnt even eat half of it and I had to throw it away as well. I tried that again for a few more days and nothing was working. I even tried leaving one pouch in there for her to eat throughout the day, but again she didnt even eat half of it. Also, Ive changed her food up as well to see if thats the issue – now I have to give her more dry food so she doesnt starve because shes wont eat anything else.

But now she actually is starting to look skinny and Im worried.

This same feeling translates when we are feeding our cats. We want them to eat and to enjoy eating. So when they dont want to eat or seem picky about their food, we as humans struggle with that.

So why is it cats cause us such heartache about eating? Are their palates so refined that we cant suit them? If youve ever dealt with a cat that seemingly refuses to eat, you are certainly not alone in sometimes feeling a little crazed and helpless. As for the theory about cats just being picky, its somewhat true, but there are a lot of nuances.

Dry Food Makes Cats Kibble Addicts

My Cat Wont Eat or Drink What Can That Mean?

The kibble manufacturers and a cats discerning nature work against us when we try to transition our cats to a wet food diet. One reason that cats like dry food so much is because the pet food companies coat the kibble with an enticing animal digest spray. You really dont want to know what that is, but it makes kibble almost addictive to cats.

In the first few weeks of their lives, kittens depend on their mother for nourishment, meaning they feed solely on breast milk or kitten replacer formulas if theyre fosters. Once they start eating solids at around week three, kittens require a balanced diet based on the following nutrient ratio:

Less than 3%

Because the babys nutritional needs are different from those of an adult or senior cat, its best to feed them specially formulated kitten food. These recipes are designed to safeguard the kittens developing stomach and sustain their growth. While both wet and dry variants are available, moist kitten food is more nourishing because of the high protein and moisture content. Dry biscuits are also highly caloric and could mess with their weight.

The shift from KMR to solids can be difficult, so dont be discouraged if your kitten wont eat wet food at first! The taste and texture may be foreign to them.

Heres what you can do to make the transition easier:

  • Mix the wet food with kitten formulaIf you soak the wet food in KMR, your baby cat will be drawn to the familiar aroma. As they get used to the new meal plan, gradually decrease the amount of KMR until theres only wet food left in the bowl
  • Remember these tips because you can use them when the time comes to switch to big cat food!

Why Is My Cat So Picky About Wet Food

Cats are generally picky eaters, to begin with. Wet food can be a strange addition to their diet that they arent interested in at first. Wet food might also seem smelly or be too strongly flavored for your cat. Some flavors, like beef, may also be too fatty for your cat.

Its hard to know exactly why your cat is picky about wet food, but trying new flavors and textures, as well as different brands of wet food, can help you find options they enjoy.

What Do You Do If Your Cat Wont Eat Wet Food

If your cat is still eating kibble regularly, you probably dont need to worry about your cat being sick, even if they refuse wet foods. Instead of worrying that your cat has a medical issue, try changing up the flavor or texture of their food.

If changing the flavor doesnt work, consider mixing some kibble in with the wet food or even using treats or a special topper to make it more appealing.

The chances are that your cat will eat wet food more eagerly after the first few times you get them to try it.

If your cat still doesnt eat, your cat might just not like wet food. You can use kibbles, broths, and even fresh cat food from the refrigerated section of your pet store to help make sure theyre getting a complete diet.

Experiment With Different Cat Food Brands And Flavors

Cat owners dont need to transition their poet away from kibble entirely. Kibble plays a valuable role in your cats diet, and its way more affordable than wet food.

However, pet owners can always do a better job monitoring their cats kibble intake to prevent overeating and obesity in their feline friends.

Wet food is a great way to bring more variety into your cats diet, giving them something different to eat. Finding the right balance between wet and dry food takes some experimenting, but youll find the sweet spot eventually.

Cats enjoy textures in food more than dogs, and theyll appreciate the wet food from time to time. Its also a great way to get cats eating that might be picky eaters.

Choose a few flavors and brands and see which one your cat prefers.

Licking Only The Gravy Leaving The Rest

If your cat is only licking the gravy and not chewing on the morsels, it could be related to teeth issues. If you have this suspicion take your cat to a Vet for a checkup to discard this possible health issue.

Another possibility is the type of cat bowl or dish. Sometimes the cat cant eat the morsels or shreds because they slide as the cat is licking the food or when trying to bite the morsels. The solution is getting a bowl that stops the pieces of meat from sliding around or from spilling out the bowl while the cat is eating. I was feeding my cat with the CatGuru bowl that comes with a nice base because she needed a wider bowl for whisker sensitivity. But it seems like she stopped eating the morsels and started licking her food instead. So I had to switch to the Yangbaga elevated cat bowl that I was using for water and it worked much better. Now she eats more morsels.

Wet Food Changes Once Refrigerated Especially The Gravy Type

Cats in the wild eat their prey when is still warm so the temperature of the food is important. This hasnt changed and thats why cats dont like wet food when its too cold. Not only that, the texture, consistency, and aroma of wet food change when is stored in the refrigerator.

I discovered that my cat refuses wet food once its refrigerated but she eats it when the pouch has just been opened. Before refrigeration, the gravy is a nice tasty liquid with lots of chicken flavor that my cat loves to lick, which entices her to eat the whole meal. When I get the food out of the refrigerator the gravy becomes thick, not liquid at all. Also, the nice aroma of the wet food seems like its gone once refrigerated. My cat sniffs the food and she doesnt seem to find it attractive and simply walks away.

    • Tip #1: Microwave the wet food for about 5 seconds, the consistency wont be thick and the aroma gets stronger.
    • Tip #2: Once you put the wet food in the bowl, store the rest in a bowl with cold water. If the temperature is too hot, put one ice cube in the water. This will keep the wet food fresh without the need for refrigeration so it wont lose its texture or aroma. As long as the water temperature is below 70 degrees this trick will work. This tip applies also to any other type of canned food, such as pates or shredded.

Aim For Variety In Your Cat’s Diet

Variety in your cat’s meals is a good thing. Feline nutrition expert Ingrid King of The Conscious Cat, recommends rotating diets to provide complete and balanced nutrition.

Variety in training rewards is also important. Rewards will need to vary depending on the skill you are working on. For easy skills and tricks, dry food can work well, but challenging behaviors will require a higher value treat. Harder jobs require bigger pay checks.

My favorite treats to use in training are freeze-dried treats like PureBites because they are healthy , easy to break into small pieces, and offer lots of variety. I reserve the lickable treat Churu Purée for the grooming behaviors like nail trims. A recall outside amongst all the distractions earns my cat Temptations.

Churu Purée Treats are excellent for working on nail trims and other grooming and handling skills.

They Dont Know That Wet Food Is Food

Baby Food For Cat That Won

Especially if youre presenting a newly adopted cat or kitten with wet food for the first time, they may honestly not realize that its food or that its okay for them to eat. This is especially common among cats that have tried to eat human foods like scrambled eggs or soups and have been told no.

Most cats will figure out that wet food is for them with a little encouragement if they need any at all. Alternatively, you can mix a little familiar kibble in with the wet food to encourage them to start eating.

Preventive Vet staff review from Chris: There was a period in which Rajah and his sister Zsa Zsa weren’t getting along. What we found was that they had very few mentally stimulating activities, which led to boredom and aggression towards each other. My first purchase was the Trixie Mad Scientist Activity for its simplicity. It has become a favorite of Rajah’s . He’s constantly found pawing away at the activity several times a day, hoping to find some kibble. And although Zsa Zsa isn’t as food motivated, she enjoys watching her brother figure out how to get the treats!

Pro Tip: Make sure you choose the appropriate dispensing top that will either allow larger kibble or treats to fall out without too much effort or to keep smaller kibble from pouring out too quickly.
