Leopard / Black Panther

SS-92 Enjoy this Animal World with Affan Irfan wildlife. #Animals #Wildanimals #Wildlife

Whats this? Two cats sharing one spot? Nope, its the same species. The black panther is a leopard with a black coat. Its caused by melanism, a color variation that also appears with jaguars. Matter of fact, the Leopard and the Jaguar have more in common, they are very alike in appearance, except that the Jaguar is the Leopard big brother.

The Leopard has the largest tail among the wild cats. Their tail can get up to 43 inch long. Leopards will eat about anything, from beetles to birds to monkeys and even elands.

This is in the advantage of the Leopard, because bigger predators will fight them for their prey. The Leopard will wisely walk away from any fight it knows it will lose, and simply choose a prey that the other predator wont eat.

The Great Plains Foundation Big Cats Initiative

In 2009, the National Geographic Society, in partnership with National Geographic Explorers at Large and world renowned conservationists and filmmakers Dereck and Beverly Joubert, founded the Big Cats Initiative to halt the decline of big cats in the wild. BCI made a substantial impact in big cats conservation, awarding more than 150 grants for work in 28 countries, funding individuals on-the-ground research and innovative field-based conservation projects to safeguard big cats and their critical habitats. This impact continues under Dereck and Beverlys leadership at the Great Plains Big Cats Initiative.

The Society remains committed to protecting big cats and has a renewed focus on supporting wildlife workincluding the development of new grant opportunitiesfor Explorers who are on the frontlines of conservation. The Biggest Cat In The World

Yes, sounds like the start of a joke, but What do you get if you cross a lion with a tiger? Well, actually you can get two things depending on the sex of the parents. We are interested in what you get when you cross a male lion with a female tiger, and that is a liger .

The liger is bigger than any of the cats that occur naturally. They dont happen in the wild because lions live in Africa and tigers live in Asia. That and they probably dont get along that well in the wild either. In terms of appearance you get a fair mix some faint stripes from the mother, a mini-mane from the father and growth promoting genes. What this results in is a animal weighing in at a massive 410 kg and this is lean weight.

In case you are wondering, a male tiger crossed with a female lion is known as a tigon. Again they inherit their appearance from both parent, however, they dont grow particularly big.

    Where Do Jaguars Live

Today, the jaguar is found in South and Central America, from Mexico to northern Argentina. The species range formerly spread over the US border into the southern states of America, but had become wiped out there by the 1940s due to hunting. There have been sporadic sightings in Arizona in recent years, however.

While jaguars do live in drier regions, theyre normally strongly associated with water, and they thrive in rainforests like the Amazon and in dense swamplands and wetlands that provide plenty of cover for stalking prey.

Fastest Wild Cats In The World

Cats can be seen all over the world right from your neighbours pet to big cats including tigers, cheetah, jaguar, lion and many others. Some of the big cats are too fast to chase preys and hunt them down, Cheetah, one of the biggest cats is the fastest land animals on planet Earth, Let me list down some of the fastest cats in the world,

Why Do Big Cats Usually Stalk And Pounce

Hunting consumes a huge amount of energy, and it is much more calorie-efficient for cats to sit, wait, stalk and pounce rather than travel long distances over difficult terrain, says BBC Wildlife contributor Karen Emslie.

Feline energy expenditure has been the subject of research by scientists from the University of California, who developed a high-tech collar equipped with GPS and accelerometers to track and monitor wild mountain lions.

They found that not only do the cats use the most energy-efficient form of hunting and stalking, but they also adjust the power of their pounce depending on the size of their prey.

The team also studied captive mountain lions and discovered that, despite their strength, they lack a high aerobic capacity, and therefore have a slow walking pace. This enables them to conserve energy for killer bursts of speed and power pounces.

How Many Subspecies Of Lion Are There

There is only one species of lion, which is known scientifically as Panthera leo. There are two recognised subspecies, the African lion and the Asiatic lion .

Some taxonomists have proposed a different split of the subspecies with P. l. leo covering lions in Asian and west, central and north Africa, and P. l. melanochaita for lions in south and east Africa.

    Why Can’t Cheetahs Roar

The bones of the cheetah’s voice box form a fixed structure, with divided vocal cords that vibrate with both in and out breaths. This structure is the same for all the ‘small’ cats. While this design enables these cats to purr continuously, it limits the range of other sounds and prevents them from being able to roar.

Just because cheetahs are relatively large, that doesn’t mean they can roar – they still have small-cat anatomy despite their size, and it’s exactly the same for pumas/mountain lions.
