      James Bowen, who met Bob during his battle with drug addiction, says pet saved his life

      The pet that inspired the book series and film A Street Cat Named Bob has died aged 14.

      James Bowen met Bob in 2007 during his battle with drug addiction when he found the cat abandoned and injured and decided to look after him.

      He began taking the ginger cat, often seen wearing a scarf, with him when busking or selling The Big Issue in London.

      Bowen then wrote a book about their relationship, titled A Street Cat Named Bob, which became a smash hit and was made into a film in 2016 in which Bob played himself alongside six lookalikes.

      In a statement on the official Facebook page for Bowens books, the author said Bob had saved his life.

      He added: Its as simple as that. He gave me so much more than companionship. With him at my side, I found a direction and purpose that Id been missing.

      He said the success they found together was miraculous, adding: Hes met thousands of people, touched millions of lives.

      Theres never been a cat like him. And never will again. I feel like the light has gone out in my life. I will never forget him.

      Paul McNamee, editor of The Big Issue, said: First Bob changed James Bowens life, then he changed the world. He meant a great deal to The Big Issue and was a huge part of our story, as The Big Issue was to his story.

      Bob The Cat Who Inspired James Bowen’s Book And Film ‘a Street Cat Named Bob’ Dies

      James Bowen and a Street Cat Named Bob

      LONDON Bob, a cat whose relationship with the recovering heroin addict who adopted him inspired the book and film A Street Cat Named Bob, has died. He was at least 14.

      Publisher Hodder & Stoughton said Tuesday that Bob had died a day earlier, noting he was an extraordinary cat who will be greatly missed.

      Bobs life took him from the streets of London to red carpet premieres as a film star. Musician James Bowen found the ginger cat abandoned and injured in 2007 and adopted him.

      The cat was soon accompanying Bowen as he busked and sold The Big Issue, a magazine that generates income for the homeless, around the British capital.

      The pair attracted attention, a local newspaper reporter told their story, and Bowen secured a book deal. A Street Cat Named Bob was published in 2012 and became a British best-seller.

      It was followed by The World According to Bob, A Gift from Bob and The Little Book of Bob. Together, the four books sold more than 8 million copies in 40 languages, the publisher said.

      A Street Cat Named Bob was turned into a movie of the same name, starring Luke Treadaway as Bowen and Bob as himself. A sequel, A Gift From Bob, is due for release later this year.

      The Big Issues Laura Kelly sat down with James and his onscreen alter ego Luke Treadaway for a socially distanced reminiscence about the late, great Bob.

      It will be a bittersweet Christmas without Bob this year, says James, but his final appearance on the silver screen is an appropriate tribute to a truly remarkable cat.

      The Big Issue: The movie is a tribute in many ways to Street Cat Bob. Do you think that the film does a good job of celebrating his legacy?

      James Bowen:Yes, absolutely. I couldnt be prouder of my little man. Its really such a shame that he cant be here to know how much love hes receiving for it. Hes always in my heart and soul. And anybody whos ever appreciated him in any way, theres a little bit of him in all of those people.

      Luke, did your understanding of Big Issue vendors change through working on these films?

      A Street Cat Named Bob By James Bowen

      A Street Cat Named Bob by James Bowen

      A Street Cat Named Bob is the first of three autobiographical books penned by James Bowen, published in 2010. It was followed by The World According to Bob in 2013 and the latest A Gift from Bob, published ;

      His personal story, and that of Bob, is a heart-warming true tale of how a stray cat came to live with a recovering heroin addict.; James writes unashamedly about his past, living on the streets of London, or in shelters, without much hope for the future.; One day in 2007, in the foyer of his North London apartment block, he finds an injured ginger cat.; Despite having insufficient money to feed and look after himself, he takes the cat to the vet and nurses the newly-named Bob back to health.;

      By the time Bob has recovered from his injuries, the two are inseparable and Bob starts to accompany James each day busking on the London streets.; Londoners and tourists have a soft spot for animals and Bob and James become very popular.; Busking doesnt bring in a steady income so James starts selling The Big Issue.; Eventually a local publisher persuades James to write his autobiography, with the help of a ghost writer, at first.; To no ones surprise the first book becomes a best seller.

      I love this series: its a true story, it has a happy ending, and it really explains The Big Issue, its operations and the group of sellers who utterly rely upon sales for their livelihood.

      Thoroughly recommended for people who like autobiographies, and animal lovers.

      James said: “I find myself looking around and expecting to see him and when I realise hes gone, it feels as if I cant breathe. Its a nightmare. He was my best friend.

      “Did the driver stop? Did they even know theyd hit him? How long was Bob lying there before the passer-by saw him?”

      “I just cant believe it. I thought we would have more time together. He was getting older but Ive no doubt he still had years left in him.”

      James said he has struggled to sleep since Bob first went missing.
